This is the Friday, January 19, 2007 Missouri Rare Bird Alert, a statewide service
of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports submitted by ASM members and
other birders throughout the state.

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual, or accidental
on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004 and
2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section are
listed as “casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be considered rare
only during a particular season or in a particular part of the state.) The

SOUTHEAST

On Wednesday, January 17, Bill Reeves and Bob Lewis found a winter male LARK
BUNTING near Dudley (Stoddard Co.). Directions are as follows: From Hwy 60 take
Hwy TT south a ¼ of a mile to the BP Gas Station. Turn right on the service road
(heading west) for 0.8 miles. At this point there are two flooded fields on the
right side of the road, the bird was observed just past the second field on the
north side of the service road.

Bill and Bob also observed a GRAT EGRET at the edge of the third pool at Otter
Slough CA (Stoddard and Butler Co’s.) on January 17, likely the same bird reported
by Judy Bergman on January 10. Additionally, they observed a pair of GREATER
SCAUP at Otter Slough CA.

At the home of Wes and Claudia Mueller, Cape Girardeau, an immature RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD continues to visit their feeders since at least November 18. If

ST. LOUIS AREA

At Riverlands MBS (St. Charles Co.) on Saturday, January 13, the SLAS field trip
participants (led by Mike Thelan) observed the two TUNDRA SWANS at Teal Pond.
These birds have been present since at least December 16. Other birds of note
observed included TRUMPETER SWANS, 2 GREATER SCAUP, and HOODED and RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS. The GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, first reported by Joe Eades on January
10, was last observed by Dave Rogles on Sunday, January 14. The SURF SCOTER,
present since mid-December, was last observed by the Thursday WGNSS birding group
on Thursday, January 18, in Ellis Bay. Additionally on January 18, Dave Rogles
observed 2 BLACK SCOTERS in Ellis Bay. Dave also reported seeing at least on
immature GLAUCOUS GULL in the Ellis Bay evening gull roost on January 18.

On Monday, January 15, Charlene Malone observed a MERLIN at Columbia Bottom CA
(St. Louis County). Charlene also reported observing 400-500 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and a few ROSS’S GEESE mixed in with the Snow Geese.

On Saturday, January 13, Judith Graber observed a PALM WARBLER at the Missouri
Botanical Garden (St. Louis City). The bird was observed in the Chinese Garden
sitting in an apple tree between the pagoda and the pond.

COLUMBIA/CENTRAL

On Monday, January 15, Adam Nisbett noticed a COMMON REDPOLL at his feeder in
Maries Co. Adam has observed the bird each day since his initial sighting. If

NORTHWEST

On Friday, January 12, Larry Lade observed 2 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS in the Lake
Contrary area (Buchanan Co.).

On the eastern side of Robertson Crist Park (Nodaway Co.) Peter Kondrashov found a
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on Tuesday, January 16.

On Thursday, January 18, Peter Kondrashov observed 1 FOX SPARROW and 3 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS along the old railroad tracks west of the NWMSU campus (Nodaway Co.).

ADDENDUM

70 species were recorded during the Maryville CBC (Nodaway Co.) on December 17,
2006. Highlights included 16 CANVASBACK, 6 REHEAD, 2 GREATER SCAUP, a juvenile
female LONG-TAILED DUCK (first found on December 16), BUFFLEHEAD, 3 RUDDY DUCKS, a
record high count of 157 AMERICAN COOTS, a single NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, and 3 SNOW
BUNTINGS.
