Sightings for January 20
A female HOARY REDPOLL was found amongst a flock of 250 COMMON REDPOLLS in
the Hall Rd area of Kelowna (CC,RT). The birds were feeding in large birches
behind the houses at the end of Jackson Ct. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK startled
the birds and they were later relocated along Dunsmuir Rd. Birders should
cruise the Hall Rd. neighborhoods in search of birch trees and feeding
redpolls.
Seen from the beach access on Manhattan Point in Kelowna's North End, were
two male RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS (CC,RT). The birds were quite far out on
the lake to the N. of Manhattan Point.
At the Maude Roxby Bird Sanctuary in Kelowna, a male WOOD DUCK was seen
amongst the MALLARDS in the marsh. Also here, a female VARIED THRUSH was
eating Mountain Ash berries in a tree near the kiosk (CC,RT). On Jan 19, a
flock of 20 CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen at Maude Roxby (RT).
Sightings for January 14
A DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was seen flying S. along the Okanagan Lake shore
in Kelowna at the foot of Collett Rd. in the Mission (CC,RT).
An adult tan-stripe WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen at the spring along the
first few hundred meters of the greenway at Scenic Canyon along Mission Ck
in Kelowna (CC,RT).
A GYRFALCON was seen perched on a pole overlooking the busy traffic at Hwy
97 and Leathead Rd in Rutland (CC,RT).
