For January 20, 2007, this is the Philadelphia Birdline. The birdline is
sponsored by several bird clubs from the Delaware Valley and comes to you
from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. I'm Andy Ednie, glad
to be with you. Armas Hill is away this week.

A LONG-BILLED MURRLET was found on Thursday and seen again, Friday at Sandy
Hook, New Jersey. That bird was seen in the ocean off Parking lot C
(Chokecherry Beach) to Parking lot B (Bayberry Beach). With gale force winds
expected this weekend off the coast, viewing conditions will be difficult.
No report was received today. A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE has also been
present at Sandy Hook, in the cove behind the bird observatory.

Last weekend, an adult CALIFORNIA GULL was found on the DVOC field trip to
Bristol, Bucks Co. The bird was found near the old Dial Factory; now know as
Riverview Crossing, off Radcliff Rd. The previously reported immature
BLACK-HEADED GULL was again seen on Wednesday, north of Bristol at Tullytown
off River Road, by Franklin's Cove.

A BAND-TAILED PIGEON had been coming to a feeder in West Cape May, at 152
Stevens Street. That bird was most often seen in the morning, but it was not
seen since Thursday. There was one report of it flying past the lighthouse
last Friday.

The PAINT BUNTING at the Heinz National Environmental Education Center at
Tinicum was seen last weekend, and reported again this morning. The bird is
being seen along the pipeline trail behind the nature center. Also seen
there today was a MONK PARAKEET.

The ponds at FDR Park in South Philly produced an adult ROSS' GOOSE on
Saturday, a nice bird for Philadelphia Co. Also on the ponds were NORTHERN
SHOVELER, GADWALL, and many PIED-BILLED GREBES. Only PIED-BILLED GREBE,
AMERICAN COOTS, and one lone RUDDY DUCK were seen in the rain, last Sunday.

An immature BALTIMORE ORIOLE is coming to Schutsky's feeding station, to the
heated birdbath, in Peach Bottom, Lancaster Co.

The previously reported ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continues to be seen in
Stockton, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey this week. That bird was last reported
at the intersection of Rt 29 (Main Street) and Ferry Rd. The WESTERN TANAGER
at nearby Echo Hill Park continues to be seen there.

In Cape May, a REDHEAD continues to be seen at Lily Lake, mixed in with
GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, HOODED MERGANSER, and PIED-BILLED GREBE. A GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE has been among the waterfowl at the duck pond on Madison
Ave in downtown Cape May.

A lone LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was found at the Forsytle NWR at Brigantine
this week. It was the only shorebird in the refuge.

BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS continue to be seen in Pennsville, Salem Co. Those birds
are usually seen off Freas Rd - Supawna Rd. A late GLOSSY IBIS was seen
there last Saturday.

A flock of 14 SANDHILL CRANES are being seen in Cumberland Co., at Husted
Landing Rd, below Bridgeton. Those birds are only present there in the
morning, coming back to roost in the evening. A dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
was also seen there.

In Delaware, the NORTHERN SHRIKE that was posted here last week continues to
be seen at the recycling bins along the road to the headquarters at Prime
Hook NWR. You can access the entrance road off Rt. 16, the Broadkill Beach
Road. Several CACKLING GEESE and a ROSS' GOOSE were reported at the
Broadkill Beach impoundments this week, among the 30-50 thousand SNOW GEESE
that have been there.

A LITTLE GULL was found at Indian River Inlet this week, among the 100 plus
BONAPARTE'S GULLS that have been there.

Some good birds at Gordon's Pond, at the south end of Cape Henlopen State
Park this weekend included several LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, SNOWY EGRET, and
along the beach was a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. GRAY CATBIRD was seen at the
entrance to the bike path.
