This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was prepared Tuesday, January 23, at
3:30 pm.

Top birds this week are WOOD STORK* in VA and MISSISSIPPI KITE in WV.

Other birds of interest include geese, ducks, RING-NECKED PHEASANT,
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, AMERICAN BITTERN, TRI-COLORED HERON, falcons,
PURPLE SANDPIPERS, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER,
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, NASHVILLE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,
sparrows, RUSTY BLACKBIRD and PURPLE FINCH.

A WOOD STORK was spotted at First Landing SP, Virginia Beach, VA on
January 19. The bird was seen again on January 20 and 23.

A MISSISSIPPI KITE has been seen for six weeks in a area north of
Romney, WV which is about 1 hour's drive west of Winchester, VA. The
bird has been surviving by hunting for birds.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was located along Parkgate Drive, near Nokesville,
Prince William Co, VA on January 17. The bird was re-found on January
19 and again on January 20 at a slightly different location and with a
CACKLING GOOSE. A ROSS'S GOOSE appeared again at Merkle WMA, Prince
George's Co, MD with a sighting from January 21. A CACKLING GOOSE was
in the water at Hunting Creek, Fairfax Co, VA on January 21.

The EURASIAN WIGEON at the Eagle's Nest Golf Course pond, Worcester
Co, MD was seen again on January 18 and 20. A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED
TEAL (COMMON TEAL) was spotted at Great Oak Landing Pond, Kent Co, MD
on January 16 and again on January 18.

A lone RING-NECKED PHEASANT was noted on the right side of Rte 213 N
in Cecil County, MD on January 21.

Twenty five to twenty nine AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were spotted at
Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, on January 20.

An AMERICAN BITTERN and two TRICOLORED HERONS were seen at Indian
River Inlet, DE on January 21.

A MERLIN was seen flying over the golf course at Belle Haven,
Alexandria, VA on January 17. A PEREGRINE FALCON was observed buzzing
pigeons and doves over Sunset Hills Road, Reston, VA on January 21. A
PEREGRINE FALCON continues to be seen from an office complex at
Baileys Crossroads area of Falls Church, Fairfax Co, VA.

Two PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen on Upper Hooper Island, Dorchester Co,
MD on January 17.

The Ocean Pines pond, Worcester Co, MD held one LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL on January 20 while another was seen at the Ocean City flats on
the same day.

A first winter RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at Sky Meadows SP,
Fauquier Co, VA on January 21.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was perched in a tree at the start of the Bridle
Trail at Sky Meadows on January 21.

A female NASHVILLE WARBLER was at a nut feeder in an Annapolis, Anne
Arundel Co, MD yard on January 18. The OVENBIRD continues at the
Ripley Garden, DC with a sighting from January 20. COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS were sighted at Wakefield Park, Fairfax Co, VA and
Occoquan Bay NWR on January 21.

On January 21, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were noted at Dyke Marsh,
Fairfax Co, VA, Milltown Landing, Prince George's Co, MD, Huntley
Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA and Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co,
VA. The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continues to be seen on Bulle Rock
Parkway about 0.5 miles from Rte 155, Harford Co, MD with reports from
January 18, 20 and 21. Several LAPLAND LONGSPURS and one SNOW BUNTING
were located in a large mixed flock on January 21. Mason Branch Road
bisects this area and is a good location to start searching for the
flock.

RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen at Merkle WMA and Occoquan Bay NWR on
January 21. A small flock of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was spotted in fields
near Bluemont, VA on January 22.

A lovely male PURPLE FINCH put in an appearance at a feeder in Elkton,
Cecil Co, MD on January 16.
