Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
January 22, 3 BLACK-NECKED STILT and a REDHEAD were seen in a seen in a
small pond about 2/10ths of a mile west of Tippecanoe and just south of
Orange Show Rd. in San Bernardino. The WOOD DUCKS continue at the
southwest ponds at the Loma Linda VA hospital.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Reports from Blythe this week included 7 female type HOODED MERGANSER and
2 males at the old sewage ponds and 9 swans, thought to be a group of at
least one TRUMPETER SWAN and the rest TUNDRA SWANS.
From Idyllwild, there was a report of a male RED CROSSBILL flying over the
243 pullout just north of Saunders Meadow on Jan. 19.
From Mt. Rubidoux, there was a report of two PEREGRINE FALCON circling
above the residences just east of the mountain, then flying toward the
91/215 interchange on Jan. 20.
The continuing BLACK-HEADED GULL was seen several times this week. On Jan.
20, it was seen in the large gull flock near the mouth of the Whitewater
River at sunrise. On Jan 21 and 22, it was reported at the Kent Fish Farm
located on the northbound side of Hwy 86 just south of the Arco center
intersection. Birders visiting the fish farm may ask permission to scope
the bird from the office complex. The manager’s name is Wayne.
Fairmount Park had a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER on Jan. 21.
San Jacinto Valley highlights from Jan. 23 included 9 MOUNTAIN PLOVER on
the south shore of Mystic Lake, the continuing EASTERN PHOEBE at Marsh A
of the SJWA, a dark FERRUGINOUS HAWK on the poles at the base of the hills
south of Alessandro near Davis. MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS are still plentiful
along the fences south of Mystic Lake, and on the lake, there were 45
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and more than a hundred AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN.
Jan. 17, a GOLDEN EAGLE was seen perched in a dead Eucalyptus in a private
yard in the Menifee area.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Jan. 17, 50 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD were seen at the SE corner of Hwy 111 and
Sinclair. The continuing HARRIS’S SPARROW was spotted at the abandoned
property at the SW corner of Eddins and Sperry. Two RUDDY GROUND-DOVE and
many INCA DOVE were seen there as well. A single female AMERICAN REDSTART
was seen at the Wister Unit. The continuing GRAY FLYCATCHER was seen at
Cattle Call Park in Brawley, and a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was near the horse
stables. At the west side of Kornbloom Rd., between Bowles and Young, the
continuing LITTLE GULL was again seen, and a “Sooty” FOX SPARROW was at
the Refuge Headquarters. At Lack and Lindsay, there was a YELLOW-FOOTED
GULL with LAUGHING GULL, as well as a LARGE-BILLED SAVANNAH SPARROW.
Also on Jan. 17, other birders reported the LITTLE GULL in the same area,
and also saw a THAYER’S GULL in the same location. There was also a report
of a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER and a second year YELLOW-FOOTED GULL at Red
Hill Marina. Many MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were seen in the burned field east of
the 111 at Wilkinson Rd.
Two ROSEATE SPOONBILL were seen on jan. 20 east of Brawley at the
intersection of Farr and Hastain Rds. They were on the edge of an
irrigation ditch.
Jan. 21, the continuing ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was again seen at Fig Lagoon,
and a second ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was also possibly seen. The second hawk
needs confirmation. RUDDY GROUND-DOVE were seen at Sperry and Eddins on
Jan. 21 also, as was a SPRAGUE’S PIPIT in a field at Sinclair and 111
Jan. 22, there was a report of a WHITE-TAILED KITE, some PEREGRINE
FALCONS, a PRAIRIE FALCON and a FERRUGINOUS HAWK in the Imperial Valley
area.
Jan. 22, a report was posted of an unusual bird near Calexico in a field
on the north side of route 98 between Rockwood Rd. on the west and Corda
Rd. on the east. Birders filing the report felt it was a TRICOLORED HERON,
but are asking for additional confirmation.
A male GILA WOODPECKER was seen off Imperial Rd. near the Arizona border
on Jan. 19.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
