This is the Thursday, January 25, 2007 Missouri Rare Bird Alert, a statewide service
of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri since
1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports submitted by ASM members and other
birders throughout the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual, or accidental on
the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004 and 2005).
Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section are listed as
“casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the state.) The Missouri checklist can

ST. LOUIS AREA
Highlighting the St. Louis area this week is a male WESTERN TANAGER coming to a
feeder at a private residence in Ferguson (St. Louis County). The bird has been
present since January 17. For more information on viewing the bird, please call me

At Riverlands MBS (St. Charles Co.) on Wednesday, January 24, the SLAS field trip
participants (led by John Solodar) observed about 100 TRUMPETER SWANS at Teal Pond
and the imm. male SURF SCOTER in Ellis Bay. The later has been present since at
least mid-December and was last observed today, January 25, by Charlene Malone.
Other birds of note recorded during the SLAS fieldtrip included 2 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 4 GREATER SCAUPS, HOODED MERGANSERS and RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS. A third-winter GLAUCOUS GULL in Ellis Bay was observed by many on
Saturday, January 20. Additionally, on Sunday, January 21, Joe Eades observed an
adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL in the Ellis Bay evening gull roost. John Solodar
reported seeing the LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL again on Monday, January 22.
Dave Rogles found 2 AMERICAN PIPITS on Sunday, January 21 on the gravel road that
leads from Riverlands MBS to the Edward and Pat Jones - Confluence Point SP (St.
Charles Co.). These birds were observed near the private duck hunting club. A
couple hours later Connie Alwood observed 4 AMERICAN PIPITS in the same general
area. Also on January 21 Joe Eades observed a MERLIN near the private duck hunting
club. Possibly the same MERLIN was again observed along the confluence road on
Monday, January 22, by Rose Ann Bodman. The bird was perched in a tree near the
small pond on the left, just after crossing over the levee.
On Saturday, January 20, James Hickner observed a single EASTERN TOWHEE at Columbia
Bottom CA (St. Louis County). Dave Rogles reported observing WESTERN MEADOWLARKS at
Columbia Bottom CA on Sunday, January 21. Dave observed them perched in the Willows
that border the gravel wildlife loop.
SOUTHEAST
On Wednesday, January 17, Bill Reeves and Bob Lewis found a winter male LARK BUNTING
near Dudley (Stoddard Co.). Bill Eddleman relocated the bird on Monday, January 22.
Bill also observed 15 AMERICAN PIPITS in the rice field north of the road.
Directions are as follows: From Hwy 60 take Hwy TT south a ¼ of a mile to the BP
Gas Station. Turn right on the service road (heading west) for 0.8 miles. At this
point there are two flooded fields on the right side of the road, the bird was
observed just past the second field on the north side of the service road. [DeMO p.

On Saturday, January 20, Joe Eades observed the GREAT EGRET at Otter Slough CA
(Stoddard and Butler Co’s.) first reported by Judy Bergman on January 10.
Additionally, Joe observed a single DUNLIN at Otter Slough CA.
At the home of Wes and Claudia Mueller, Cape Girardeau, an immature RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD continues to visit their feeders since at least November 18. If

In the parking area pine stand at the northeast end of the Lake Wappapello dam
(Wayne Co.), Joe Eades observed 3 PINE WARBLERS on Saturday, January 20.
Judy Bergman observed BUFFLEHEADS and a single EASTERN PHOEBE at Duck Creek CA
(Stoddard/Bollinger Co’s.) on Thursday, January 25. Additionally on January 25,
Judy observed AMERICAN PIPITS with Lapland Longspurs about a mile down CR 234 (off
of Hwy 51) in a bare agricultural field (Stoddard Co.).
SOUTHWEST
Larry Herbert observed a BARN OWL on Saturday, January 20, at Capps Creek CA (Newton
Co.).
On Monday, January 22, Larry Herbert found an EASTERN PHOEBE at the MSSU wetland in
Joplin (Jasper Co.).
COLUMBIA/CENTRAL
At Bradford Farms (Boone Co.) Jonathan Pons observed 2 HARRIS’S SPARROWS at “the
brushpile” on Sunday, January 21.
On Monday, January 15, Adam Nisbett noticed a COMMON REDPOLL at his feeder in Maries
Co. Adam last reported seeing the bird on January 20. The bird has not been
observed the last couple of days at the time of this report.
KANSAS CITY AREA
Two trips to Smithville Lake (Clay Co.) during the past week (January 20 and 24)
provided a bonanza of rare winter birds for Doug Willis. Species observed included;
4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, at least 15 CACKLING GEESE, 8 TRUMPETER SWANS (near
the Little Platte Recreation Area on January 24), 4 CANVASBACKS, at least 1 GREATER
SCAUP, a single LONG-TAILED DUCK (observed only on January 20), a single BUFFLEHEAD,
as many as 160 HOODED MERGANSERS, a single RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 2 RUDDY DUCKS,
as many as 5 COMMON LOONS, 3 PIED-BILLED GREBES, a single AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, at
least 2 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, a single RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, and finally as many
as 130 AMERICAN COOTS.
NORTHEAST
Patrick Harrison observed 2 HERRING GULLS at Long Branch Lake (Macon Co.) on
Tuesday, January 23. On Wednesday, January 24, Patrick observed a single EASTERN
TOWHEE and a HARRIS’S SPARROW at Atlanta CA (Macon Co.).
Saturday, January 20, Phil Wire observed a MERLIN at Union Ridge CA (Adair/Sullivan
Co’s.). Later the same day, about a mile south of Union Ridge CA, Phil found a
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at the intersection of Hwy D and Maryland Road (Adair Co.).
NORTHWEST
On Saturday, January 20, Bob Fisher and Gary Johnson observed a PRAIRIE FALCON in
flight near Muskrat Lake (Buchanan Co.)
Another PRAIRIE FALCON was observed by Steve Kinder in Buchanan County on Wednesday,
January 24. This bird was observed from Hwy 36 just a few miles east of St. Joseph
and west of the Platte River. Later the same day, near the lower end of the
Thompson River on the west side of Chilicothe (Livingston Co.), Steve found a single
female SPOTTED TOWHEE.
On Monday, January 22, Steve Kinder reported a couple of NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS are
still hanging out at Poosey CA (Livingston Co.).
