In Sandoval County:
CR checked the Corrales Bosque off Romero Road on January 21. He had an
EASTERN PHOEBE south of Romero. A SWAMP SPARROW was along the Rio and on the
river there was a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYES.
BH found Cochiti Lake totally frozen for the first time on January 15.
Ducks were on the Rio at the Spillway including COMMON GOLDENEYES.
In Santa Fe County:
JB had a SAW-WHET OWL calling at his home in Santa Fe at West Zia Road just
off of the Old Pecos Trail on January 23 at 8:45 p.m.
RE on January 20 had a SAW-WHET OWL about 2.5 miles up the road to the Santa
Fe Ski Basin on the Aspen Vista Service Road. One needs to snowshoe or ski
in.
In San Miguel County:
CBe on January 20 to 22 at her feeder at Montezuma near the United World
College along the Gallinas Rio had 18 ROSY FINCHES (BLACK and GRAY-CROWNED) with
one on January 23. Also present was a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. (They had
been seen in the area in the 1960's). Call her at 454-1504).
On January 19 JP, WW, and LL found at Las Vegas McAllister Lake frozen, but
some open spots were on Crane Lake of the Las Vegas Refuge nearby.
In Colfax County:
Lake 13 on the Maxwell Refuge is frozen, as is Springer Lake. Stubblefield
is 95% frozen. On January 19 JP, WW, and LL saw the LONG-TAILED DUCK still
present with 10 LAPLAND LONGSPURS on Maxwell. They found the NORTHERN SHRIKE
on NM496 north of Maxwell.
On January 19 they found another NORTHERN SHRIKE on I-25 south of Raton. In
Raton were many CASSIN'S FINCHES with three LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS below
Sugarite Canyon State Park.
In Quay County:
At Ute Lake on January 6 JP and WW saw a BROWN THRASHER, two SWAMP SPARROWS,
and a BOBWHITE.
In Bernalillo County:
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque DP had a SLATE-COLORED FOX
SPARROW at the observation feeder. JP saw it on January 14 and 21.
CW and others saw on January 21 about 45 RED CROSSBILLS between the Capulin
Springs Picnic area and the Crest House.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
ROSY-FINCHES. The SNC banding team reported that January 21 was another good
banding day. The team banded 73 ROSY FINCHES, with 18 more HEPBURN'S (65 this
winter!). The seasons total now is 441 with 325 BLACKS, five BROWN-CAPPED,
and 111 GRAY-CROWNED. And they still saw 200 unbanded birds.
In Valencia County:
JP, WW, and MB on January 13 found the WHITE-FACED IBIS back at the Taco
Bell Marsh in Belen. JP reported it still there on January 20.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on January 20 JP found the
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at the visitor center
with SAGE SPARROWS along the Canyon Trail. BV on January 13 found four
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and two CINNAMON TEAL at the south end of the Farm Loop. JP,
WW, and MB had the EASTERN PHOEBE at the Flight Deck January 13.
In the area 16 miles east of San Antonio on County Rd. 127 JP, WW, and LL on
January 5 found one SPRAGUE'S PIPIT with many longspurs.
JO has had three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at his home in Luis Lopez south of
Socorro. They were still present on January 18 with the HARRIS'S SPARROW and
MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE. JP saw the Harris's Sparrow on January 20.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park JP, WW, and MB found the DIPPER still present with
an OSPREY, a calling HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER, and the immature YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER on January 13. CL on January 14 saw two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE a
quarter mile south of Percha.
CL found an adult MEW GULL on Caballo Lake on December 29 at a road marked
Caballo Dam East. It was at Percha Flats below the dam for JP, WW, and MB on
January 13 with a COMMON LOON. CL and CBr had the loon on January 17. BJ
and others found a BONAPARTE'S GULL at the boat ramp on January 14. At
Riverside Park below the dam JP reported a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW January 13. CL
found a HOUSE WREN there January 14.
CL on December 22 at Elephant Butte Lake's Rock Canyon Marina recorded a
CALIFORNIA GULL with several HERRING GULLS. JP, WW, and MB on January 13 had an
adult THAYER'S GULL on the breakwater with the Herring Gulls. GB on the
tires at the marina on January 24 found an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
In Grant County:
At the Gila Bird Farm area near Cliff on January 21 EW reported a WINTER
WREN with two HOODED MERGANSERS on the pond and 40 SANDHILL CRANES.
DBe reported 150 PINYON JAYS near the Bear Mt. Lodge north of Silver City.
EL at Roberts Lake on January 5 found a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYEs with a
SORA.
In Hidalgo County:
PL on January 15 spotted a WHITE-TAILED KITE south of Animas.
In Clanton Canyon MH, CW, and BT on January 13 had four ARIZONA WOODPECKERS,
four WHISKERED SCREECH-OWLS and a LONG-EARED OWL.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Doņa Ana County:
JPa found a first winter ICELAND GULL on the Sunland Park racetrack pond
December 5. It stays with a HERRING GULL and seems to appear in the late
afternoon. JP advises that one needs to get permission to look for it from the
casino's office near the Jackpot Grill. There is a platform from which one can
scope. But JB and JO say that the racetrack does NOT want ANY birders there
when the horses are racing on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
beginning at 12:15 p.m. JPa saw it on January 8 with an adult MEW GULL. MS and
JZ on January 12 found three adult CALIFORNIAS and the Mew Gull. JP, WW, and
MB on January 12 from outside the fence on the north end saw the two adult
Californias, an immature Herring, and at 4:30 the Iceland, but no Mew Gull. KS
reported the Iceland January 15, PS on January 17. On January 14 JY
reported the escaped MILITARY MACAW seen again in the area.
Along the Rio Grande near the track JP saw an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and
two MOORHENS on January 12. KS on January 15 on McNutt Rd. in Santa Teresa saw
20 LEAST SANDPIPERS on the Rio.
JZ and MS saw 34 SNIPES at Swan Pond on January 15. In an alfalfa field
near Garfield there were 1100 SANDHILL CRANES. At Swan Pond on January 23 they
saw a HOUSE WREN. There was a report of a BALD EAGLE on January 24 with the
wren, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, LINCOLN'S and SWAMP SPARROWS. There was also
a male REDHEAD. At Swan Pond they saw a GREATER YELLOWLEGS on January 24.
In Fillmore Canyon on the west side of the Organ Mts. JZ and MS near the
spring saw the RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, a SOLITAIRE, one MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, and
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS.
At the bottom of Ice Canyon near the Dripping Springs east of Las Cruces JZ
and MS found a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on january 21.
At a ditch off of Snow Road near Mesilla and the NMSU Plant Science Center
CL has had an EASTERN PHOEBE. JZ and MS found it on January 7, but found the
road too muddy January 20
. CL had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in the area on January 12. On January 15
he had a YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER female near Mesilla Dam a mile north of the
west end of NM 374.
MS and JZ saw a CACKLING GOOSE at Burn Lake in Las Cruces with 37 CANADA
GEESE on January 12. CL saw the cackling goose on the lake on January 15.
From Mesquite to Vado on January 23 CL found three SNOWY EGRETS, seven
CINNAMON TEAL, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and a HOUSE WREN.
At the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park CL on January 15 saw a SWAMP SPARROW.
Exiting I-10 onto county rd. C01 MS and JZ found in tobosa grass near a tank
four SPRAGUE'S PIPITS near NM 549. CL on January 12 found three pipits west
of the tank.
JP, WW, and MB at the NMSU cattle pens on January 13 saw a male and three
female BRONZED COWBIRDS. CL did not see any on January 23.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs had a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
appear January 9. It was still present January 16. A female RUDDY
GROUND-DOVE, perhaps the same present last fall, came to their yard on January 15 and
16. Also seen was a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW January 16.
A BLACK PHOEBE has been present for 11 days on January 23 with the
hummingbird and two SLATE-COLORED JUNCOS.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings. On January 12 JP, WW, and MB found the DUNLIN
still at the lakes.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call

plans. On February 1 the trip is to Bosque del Apache Refuge with Rebecca
Gracey; they explore the Corrales bosque with Beverly Silfer on February 8; on
February 15 they hike Embudo Canyon with Jeanine Zenge, and on February 22 the
new Albuquerque Open Space Visitor Center with Alice Weis.
The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays,
January 28 February 4, 11, 18, and 25.
On Saturday, February 3, Central Audubon will go to Elephant Butte Lake.

In Clanton Canyon MH, CW, and BT on January 13 had four ARIZONA WOODPECKERS,
four WHISKERED SCREECH-OWLS and a LONG-EARED OWL.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Doņa Ana County:
JPa found a first winter ICELAND GULL on the Sunland Park racetrack pond
December 5. It stays with a HERRING GULL and seems to appear in the late
afternoon. JP advises that one needs to get permission to look for it from the
casino's office near the Jackpot Grill. There is a platform from which one can
scope. But JB and JO say that the racetrack does NOT want ANY birders there
when the horses are racing on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
beginning at 12:15 p.m. JPa saw it on January 8 with an adult MEW GULL. MS and
JZ on January 12 found three adult CALIFORNIAS and the Mew Gull. JP, WW, and
MB on January 12 from outside the fence on the north end saw the two adult
Californias, an immature Herring, and at 4:30 the Iceland, but no Mew Gull. KS
reported the Iceland January 15, PS on January 17. On January 14 JY
reported the escaped MILITARY MACAW seen again in the area.
Along the Rio Grande near the track JP saw an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and
two MOORHENS on January 12. KS on January 15 on McNutt Rd. in Santa Teresa saw
20 LEAST SANDPIPERS on the Rio.
JZ and MS saw 34 SNIPES at Swan Pond on January 15. In an alfalfa field
near Garfield there were 1100 SANDHILL CRANES. At Swan Pond on January 23 they
saw a HOUSE WREN. There was a report of a BALD EAGLE on January 24 with the
wren, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, LINCOLN'S and SWAMP SPARROWS. There was also
a male REDHEAD. At Swan Pond they saw a GREATER YELLOWLEGS on January 24.
In Fillmore Canyon on the west side of the Organ Mts. JZ and MS near the
spring saw the RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, a SOLITAIRE, one MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, and
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS.
At the bottom of Ice Canyon near the Dripping Springs east of Las Cruces JZ
and MS found a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on january 21.
At a ditch off of Snow Road near Mesilla and the NMSU Plant Science Center
CL has had an EASTERN PHOEBE. JZ and MS found it on January 7, but found the
road too muddy January 20
. CL had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in the area on January 12. On January 15
he had a YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER female near Mesilla Dam a mile north of the
west end of NM 374.
MS and JZ saw a CACKLING GOOSE at Burn Lake in Las Cruces with 37 CANADA
GEESE on January 12. CL saw the cackling goose on the lake on January 15.
From Mesquite to Vado on January 23 CL found three SNOWY EGRETS, seven
CINNAMON TEAL, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and a HOUSE WREN.
At the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park CL on January 15 saw a SWAMP SPARROW.
Exiting I-10 onto county rd. C01 MS and JZ found in tobosa grass near a tank
four SPRAGUE'S PIPITS near NM 549. CL on January 12 found three pipits west
of the tank.
JP, WW, and MB at the NMSU cattle pens on January 13 saw a male and three
female BRONZED COWBIRDS. CL did not see any on January 23.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs had a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
appear January 9. It was still present January 16. A female RUDDY
GROUND-DOVE, perhaps the same present last fall, came to their yard on January 15 and
16. Also seen was a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW January 16.
A BLACK PHOEBE has been present for 11 days on January 23 with the
hummingbird and two SLATE-COLORED JUNCOS.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings. On January 12 JP, WW, and MB found the DUNLIN
still at the lakes.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call

Gracey; they explore the Corrales bosque with Beverly Silfer on February 8; on
February 15 they hike Embudo Canyon with Jeanine Zenge, and on February 22 the
new Albuquerque Open Space Visitor Center with Alice Weis.
The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays,
January 28 February 4, 11, 18, and 25.
On Saturday, February 3, Central Audubon will go to Elephant Butte Lake.
