Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
A phone report came in on Jan. 26 of a PRAIRIE FALCON seen on Arrowhead
Ave. in San Bernardino in the tallest palm.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Reports continue to come in of a BLACK-HEADED GULL AT THE Sea Tek Fish
Farm near Mecca. The latest report was Monday, Jan. 29.
The Blythe area and river had reports of several good sized flocks of
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, many LEAST SANDPIPERS at the sewage farm, and a
variety of ducks including COMMON GOLDENEYE, AMERICAN WIGEON, and
CANVASBACK.
From Mystic Lake there was a report of a BALD EAGLE which raised many
geese. Three white geese were significantly smaller than the others, and
it is believed they were ROSS’S GEESE. A second year GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL
was also seen in this area on Jan. 26. It was with a flock along the
Ramona Expressway just east of Davis Road.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was seen on Jan. 30 in the Tequesquite Park area
along the Santa Ana River trail. The bird was in a tree tobacco on the
brushy slope just past a huge patch of arunda about 100 meters up the bike
trail from Tequesquite. A TOWNSEND’S WARBLER was upslope from the towhee,
a ‘Slate-colored” Junco was across the path, and a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was
in the line of oaks up San Andreas Ave. There are still many MOUNTAIN
BLUEBIRDS in the park.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Jan. 28, an adult MEW GULL and a firs year THAYER’S GULL were seen at Red
Hill Marina. A LAUGHING GULL was seen at Lack and Lindsey, and further
south along the sea wall there was a GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL.
Jan. 23, over 400 SANDHILL CRANE were seen in the area of the Barkley Seed
Co. south of Brawley.
Two SPRAGUE’S PIPITS were seen at the southwest corner of the southwest
field at the corner of Sinclair and Hwy 111 on Jan. 29.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
