This is the Thursday, February 1, 2007 Missouri Rare
Bird Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society
of Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the

ST. LOUIS AREA
A male WESTERN TANAGER was able to be observed by many
coming as it came to feeders at a private residence in
Ferguson (St. Louis County). However, the bird has
not been present since Saturday, January 27.
At Riverlands MBS (St. Charles Co.) on Saturday,
January 27, Bill Rowe and Josh Uffman counted 135
TRUMPETER SWANS and 2 TUNDRA SWANS on Heron Pond. The
TUNDRA SWANS have been present since at least December
16. Additionally, the immature male SURF SCOTER was
observed in Ellis Bay the same day. This bird has
been present since at least mid-December. The
first-winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, first reported
by Joe Eades on Wednesday, January 12, was observed by
many on Saturday, January 27, and again by Mike Thelan
on Sunday, January 28. Finally, and although it was
not officially reported in MO waters this past week,
an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, present since
January 21, was last observed sitting on the concrete
escarpment in front of the upstream dam wall on
Saturday, January 27.
At Edward and Pat Jones - Confluence Point SP (St.
Charles Co.) Dave Rogles and the Burroughs Audubon
Society fieldtrip participants observed a GLAUCOUS
GULL on Saturday, January 27.
Late Friday afternoon, January 26, Mike Thelan
observed 6 TRUMPETER SWANS and a perched MERLIN at
Columbia Bottom CA (St. Louis County).
Mick Richardson has had a great last couple days in
his travels around the St. Louis area. On Wednesday,
January 31, Mick observed a female NORTHERN GOSHAWK
flying over I-170 near Olivette (St. Louis Co.). The
following day, February 1, Mick observed a PEREGRINE
FALCON chasing Rock Pigeons over I-44 at the Jefferson
Ave. exit (St. Louis City).
SOUTHEAST
On Wednesday, January 17, Bill Reeves and Bob Lewis
found a winter male LARK BUNTING near Dudley (Stoddard
Co.). The bird has not been reported since Bill
Eddleman relocated the bird on Monday, January 22.
Directions are as follows: From Hwy 60 take Hwy TT
south a ¼ of a mile to the BP Gas Station. Turn right
on the service road (heading west) for 0.8 miles. At
this point there are two flooded fields on the right
side of the road, the bird was observed just past the
second field on the north side of the service road.

At the home of Wes and Claudia Mueller, Cape
Girardeau, an immature RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues to
visit their feeders since at least late October 2006.
Wes has been able to keep the feeders thawed at this
point. If interested in obtaining directions to view

COLUMBIA/CENTRAL
On Sunday, January 28, Mike Doyen reported that
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES are present at White River Trace CA
(Dent Co.).
KANSAS CITY AREA
Larry Lade visited Smithville Lake (Clay Co.) on
Friday, January 26, and reported 100+ HOODED
MERGANSERS, 3 PIED-BILLED GREBES, and 5 DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS are still present. On Saturday, January
27, Laura Gilchrist went to Smithville Lake looking
for the Trumpeter Swans observed the week prior by
Doug Willis. At the Little Platte Recreation Area –
Shelter 1, Laura found 4 TRUMPETER SWANS. On Sunday,
January 28, Jennifer Reidy reported observing 12
TRUMPETER SWANS while at the Crow’s Creek picnic area.
On Wednesday, January 31, Larry Lade noted most of
Smithville Lake was frozen over with only a few small
open pools. While there, Larry did observe CACKLING
GEESE, a male BUFFLEHEAD, and 5 DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS.
At Prairie Lee Lake (Jackson Co.) Bob Fisher reported
CACKLING GEESE, 1 female GREATER SCAUP, and HOODED
MERGANSERS present on Friday, January 26.
Additionally, at Lake Jacomo (Jackson Co.) on January
26, Bob observed GREATER SCAUP and HOODED MERGANSERS;
all on a mostly frozen over lake.
NORTHEAST
Saturday, January 27, Phil Wire observed a single
HERMIT THRUSH at Thousand Hills SP (Adair Co.).
NORTHWEST
On Saturday, January 27, the Midland Empire Audubon
Society fieldtrip visited Bluffwoods CA (Buchanan Co.)
where they observed a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a
HERMIT THRUSH. Later in the morning they visited
Sugar Lake at Lewis and Clark SP (Buchanan Co.) where
they observed CACKLING GEESE and a single juvenile
TRUMPETER SWAN.
