In Sandoval County:
CR checked the Corrales Bosque off Romero Road on January 21. He had an
EASTERN PHOEBE south of Romero. A SWAMP SPARROW was along the Rio and on the
river there was a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYES.
BH found Cochiti Lake totally frozen for the first time on January 15.
Ducks were on the Rio at the Spillway including COMMON GOLDENEYES.
In Santa Fe County:
JB had a SAW-WHET OWL calling at his home in Santa Fe on West Zia Road just
off of the Old Pecos Trail on January 23 at 8:45 p.m.
RE on January 20 had a SAW-WHET OWL about 2.5 miles up the road to the Santa
Fe Ski Basin on the Aspen Vista Service Road. One needs to snowshoe or ski
in.
In San Miguel County:
CBe on January 20 to 22 at her feeder at Montezuma near the United World
College along the Gallinas Rio had 18 ROSY FINCHES (BLACK and GRAY-CROWNED) with
one on January 23. Also present was a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. Call her at
454-1504).
On January 19 JP, WW, and LL found at Las Vegas McAllister Lake frozen, but
some open spots were on Crane Lake of the Las Vegas Refuge nearby.
In Colfax County:
Lake 13 on the Maxwell Refuge is frozen, as is Springer Lake. Stubblefield
is 95% frozen. On January 19 JP, WW, and LL found the NORTHERN SHRIKE on
NM496 north of Maxwell. DC on Stubblefield January 26 found two female
LONG-TAILED DUCKS, a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS, and four to six single LAPLAND
LONGSPURS with Horned Larks.
On January 19 the JP crew found another NORTHERN SHRIKE on I-25 south of
Raton. In Raton were many CASSIN'S FINCHES with three LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS below
Sugarite Canyon State Park. DC on January 31 between the Raton Country Club
on Gardiner Road saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, the three woodpeckers and shrike,
and over 90 TREE SPARROWS.
DC south of Maxwell on January 29 had the GOLDEN EAGLE on I-25 south of
Maxwell, and a LINCOLN' SPARROW has been present in his Maxwell yard.
At French Lake DC had another Northern Shrike on January 29 with a BLUE JAY
at the Ponil Creek bridge on US 64 in Cimarron and at the NM 21 bridge there
two more jays.
In Cibola County:
HP on January 29 found two possible TRUMPETER SWANS on Acomita Lake, but JO
did not see them that day.
In Bernalillo County:
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque DP had a SLATE-COLORED FOX
SPARROW at the observation feeder. JP saw it on January 14 and 21.
CW and others saw on January 21 about 45 RED CROSSBILLS between the Capulin
Springs Picnic area and the Crest House.
JHa saw a THREE=TOED WOODPECKER and a Red Crossbill in the lower parking lot
of Sandia Crest on January 29.
LM found a large flock of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS a mile up the road to the Crest
on January 29.
TH saw an adult BALD EAGLE on the west side of the Rio Grande near the
Alameda bridge on January 26.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
ROSY-FINCHES. The SNC banding team reported that January 21 was another good
banding day. The team banded 73 ROSY FINCHES, with 18 more HEPBURN'S (65 this
winter!). The seasons total now is 441 with 325 BLACKS, five BROWN-CAPPED,
and 111 GRAY-CROWNED. And they still saw 200 unbanded birds.
In Chaves County:
JH on Bitter Lake Refuge on Unit 5 January 29 saw about 25 CACKLING GEESE
with Canadas.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on January 20 JP found the
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at the visitor center
with SAGE SPARROWS along the Canyon Trail. BV on January 13 found four
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at the south end of the Farm Loop. JP, WW, and MB had the
EASTERN PHOEBE at the Flight Deck January 13.
In the area 16 miles east of San Antonio on County Rd. 127 JP, WW, and LL on
January 5 found one SPRAGUE'S PIPIT with many longspurs.
JS had a PHAINOPEPLA at his birdbath in Socorro on January 29.
JO has had three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at his home in Luis Lopez south of
Socorro. They were still present on January 18 with the HARRIS'S SPARROW and
MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE. JP saw the Harris's Sparrow on January 20.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park JP, WW, and MB found the DIPPER still present with
the immature YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on January 13. CL on January 14 saw
two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE a quarter mile south of Percha.
CL and CBr had on Caballo Lake the COMMON LOON on January 17. At Riverside
Park below the dam JP reported a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW January 13. CL found
a HOUSE WREN there January 14.
CL on December 22 at Elephant Butte Lake's Rock Canyon Marina recorded a
CALIFORNIA GULL with several HERRING GULLS. GB on the tires at the marina on
January 24 found an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. It was seen on January 25
by JO, MB, and NP, and on January 26 by RV and BT. JB and CB found it on
January 28, SNC and CD saw it on January 30. MB and NP found the adult
THAYER'S GULL on January 25.
In Catron County:
BM had two WOOD DUCKS at her Glenwood home on January 21.
In Grant County:
At the Gila Bird Farm near Cliff on January 21 EW reported a WINTER WREN
with two HOODED MERGANSERS on the pond and 40 SANDHILL CRANES.
BNo had up to ten MONTEZUMA QUAIL on the Mountain Loop Trail near Gomez Peak
in the Gila NF on January 16.
RS had found SAGE SPARROWS along Fuller Road with goes from the county line
on NM 464 to US 70 at mile post 9.5.
In Hidalgo County:
In Clanton Canyon MH, CW, and BT on January 13 had a LONG-EARED OWL.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Doņa Ana County:
JPa found a first winter ICELAND GULL on the Sunland Park racetrack pond
December 5. It stays with a HERRING GULL and seems to appear in the late
afternoon. JP advises that one needs to get permission to look for it from the
casino's office near the Jackpot Grill. JB and JO say that the racetrack does
NOT want ANY birders there when the horses are racing on Tuesdays, Fridays,
Saturdays, and Sundays beginning at 12:15 p.m. KS reported the Iceland January
15, PS on January 17. On January 14 JY reported the escaped MILITARY MACAW
seen again in the area.
JZ and MS saw in an alfalfa field near Garfield 1100 SANDHILL CRANES. At
the southern day use area at the Leasburg State Park on January 24 MS and JZ
had a female YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER in a roadside cottonwood.
At the bottom of Ice Canyon near the Dripping Springs east of Las Cruces JZ
and MS found a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on January 21.
At a ditch off of Snow Road near Mesilla and the NMSU Plant Science Center
CL has had an EASTERN PHOEBE. JZ and MS found the road too muddy January 20.
CL saw the CACKLING GOOSE on Burn Lake on January 25.
From Mesquite to Vado on January 23 CL found seven CINNAMON TEAL, a COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and a HOUSE WREN.
Exiting I-10 onto county rd. C01 MS and JZ found in tobosa grass near a tank
four SPRAGUE'S PIPITS near NM 549. CL on January 12 found three pipits west
of the tank.
JP, WW, and MB at the NMSU cattle pens on January 13 saw a male and three
female BRONZED COWBIRDS. CL did not see any on January 23.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs had a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
appear January 9. It was still present January 16. A female RUDDY
GROUND-DOVE came to their yard on January 15 and 16. It did not appear again until
January 25 with INCA DOVES, and on January 30 with a BALD EAGLE. Also seen was
a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW January 16.
A BLACK PHOEBE has been present for 11 days on January 23 with the
hummingbird and two SLATE-COLORED JUNCOS.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. They explore the Corrales bosque with Beverly Silfer on February 8; on
February 15 they hike Embudo Canyon with Jeanine Zenge, and on February 22
the new Albuquerque Open Space Visitor Center with Alice Weis.
The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays,
February 4, 11, 18, and 25.
On Saturday, February 3, Central Audubon will go to Elephant Butte Lake.

On Saturday, February 17, Southwest Audubon will bird the Lake Roberts

On February 24, Mesilla Valley Audubon will bird the Uvas Valley Area, the

In the planning stage is a Sangre de Cristo trip to the Lower Rio Grande
Valley in Texas, from Wednesday to Sunday, February 7 to 11. Contact is Linda
