You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Friday February 2, 2007. Highlights this week include
sightings of SNOW BUNTING, CACKLING GOOSE, TRI-COLORED HERON, BROWN
PELICAN, CANVASBACK, REDHEAD, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, NASHVILLE
WARBLER, COMMON GOLDENEYE, EARED GREBE, VESPER SPARROW and NELSON’S
SHARP-TAILED SPARROW

The flock of SNOW BUNTINGS which has been frequently seen from the
dunes that the Cape May Point State Park; continues as of 1/31.

Yesterday, 2/1 a CACKLING GOOSE was found in the farm fields near the
intersection of Bay Shore and Steve’s St. in West Cape May.

The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, after wondering Cape Island for some
time, has returned to the community park on Madison Ave. in Cape May,
as of yesterday, 2/1.

On 1/31, a TRI-COLORED HERON was near the free bridge on Nummy’s Island.

Also seen on 1/31, a BROWN PELICAN was seen soaring over Jarvis Sound
near Two-Mile Landing.

A CANVASBACK was found yesterday, 2/1 on lighthouse pond at the Cape
May Point State Park.

The drake REDHEAD continues on Lake Lily as of 1/28.

On 1/26, a COMMON GOLDENEYE was found on Lake Champlain in the
Villas. Another goldeneye was reported on Lake Lily on 1/27.

The EARED GREBE continues to be seen on Lakes Bay, near Atlantic
City, as of 1/26.

The NASHVILLE WARBLER found in December at a private yard in Del
Haven, continues as of 1/27.

On 1/27, Jakes landing hosted one NELSON’S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW along
with SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW and three SHORT-EARED OWLS.

Lastly, the VESPER SPARROW continues to be seen on 1/27, in the hedge
row west of Rea’s Farm Market, on Steven’s St. in West Cape May.




ANNOUNCEMENT:

The Northwood Center will be closed this Saturday, 2/3, due to staff
attendance at the Cumberland County Winter Eagle Festival. We will
re-open at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday 2/4.

Drive in Cape May Point, winter hours are Thursday-Monday 9:00-4:30.
The Center for Research and Education on Rt. 47 is Goshen, will be
CLOSED until further notice.
