In Sandoval County:
CR checked the Corrales Bosque off Romero Road on January 21. He had an
EASTERN PHOEBE south of Romero Road. A SWAMP SPARROW was along the Rio and on
the river there was a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYES.
BH found Cochiti Lake totally frozen for the first time on January 15.
Ducks were on the Rio at the Spillway including COMMON GOLDENEYES.
In Santa Fe County:
JB had a SAW-WHET OWL calling at his home in Santa Fe on West Zia Road just
off of the Old Pecos Trail on January 23 at 8:45 p.m.
TH on January 31 saw five EVENING GROSBEAKS at Caņada de Los Alamos east of
Santa Fe.
RE on January 20 had a SAW-WHET OWL about 2.5 miles up the road to the Santa
Fe Ski Basin on the Aspen Vista Service Road. One needs to snowshoe or ski
in.
In Colfax County:
Lake 13 on the Maxwell Refuge is frozen, as is Springer Lake. Stubblefield
is 95% frozen. DC on Stubblefield Lake on February 2 saw the two female
LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
On February 3 at mile marker 8 on NM 445 north of Maxwell he found about 150
LAPLAND LONGSPURS.
On January 19 JP reported a NORTHERN SHRIKE on I-25 south of Raton. In
Raton were many CASSIN'S FINCHES with three LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS below Sugarite
Canyon State Park. DC on January 31 between the Raton Country Club on Gardiner
Road saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, the three woodpeckers and the shrike, with
over 90 TREE SPARROWS.
DC south of Maxwell on January 29 had the GOLDEN EAGLE on I-25 south of
Maxwell, and a LINCOLN' SPARROW has been present in his Maxwell yard.
At French Lake DC had another Northern Shrike on January 29 with a BLUE JAY
at the Ponil Creek bridge on US 64 in Cimarron and at the NM 21 bridge there
two more jays.
In Bernalillo County:
CW and others saw on January 21 about 45 RED CROSSBILLS between the Capulin
Springs Picnic area and the Crest House.
JHa saw a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and a Red Crossbill in the lower parking lot
of Sandia Crest on January 29.
LM found a large flock of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS a mile up the road to the Crest
on January 29.
TH saw an adult BALD EAGLE on the west side of the Rio Grande near the
Alameda bridge on January 26.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
ROSY-FINCHES. The SNC banding team reported 45 more banded on February 4, 28
BLACKS, one BROWN-CAPPED, and 16 GRAY-CROWNED (six were HEPBURN'S). So far this
winter they have banded 543: 399 Blacks, 137 Gray-crowned, and only seven
Brown-capped. (967 banded since January 2004).
In Roosevelt County:
JB saw a pair of LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKENS at Milnesand on February 1.
In Chaves County:
JH on Bitter Lake Refuge on Unit 5 January 29 saw about 25 CACKLING GEESE
with Canadas.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio BV on January 13 found four
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at the south end of the Farm Loop. JP, WW, and MB had the
EASTERN PHOEBE at the Flight Deck January 13. JP, HS, and WW saw it there
February 3 with 90 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS present. On January 29 JNM and BW had
an immature HARRIS'S SPARROW at the Norton Blind.
JS had a PHAINOPEPLA at his birdbath in Socorro on January 29.
JO has had three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS at his home in Luis Lopez south of
Socorro. They were still present on January 18 with the HARRIS'S SPARROW.
JP saw the Harris's Sparrow on January 20.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park CL found the DIPPER still present on February 4 at
the dam with the immature YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER with EASTERN BLUEBIRDS.
South of the park was the regular VERMILION FLYCATCHER and an EASTERN PHOEBE.
CL on Caballo Lake on February 4 found an immature GLAUCOUS GULL at the
Percha Flats area with one BONAPARTE'S GULL and a HERRING GULL.
CL had an OSPREY at the Oxbow Lake in Truth or Consequences on February 4.
At Paseo del Rio Park below the Elephant Butte dam JP, WW, and HS on February
3 had a male BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHER and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
At Elephant Butte Lake's Rock Canyon Marina SNC and CD saw the adult LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL on January 30. On February 3 JP, HS, and WW saw 22 HERRING
GULLS (mostly adults), two adult CALIFORNIA GULLS, the adult THAYER'S GULL,
an adult MEW GULL, and the Lesser Black-backed Gull. The only ones CL saw on
February 4 were nine HERRINGS with the Ring-bills.
In Catron County:
BM had two WOOD DUCKS at her Glenwood home on January 21.
In Grant County:
At the Gila Bird Farm near Cliff on January 21 EW reported a WINTER WREN
with 40 SANDHILL CRANES in the area..
BNo had up to ten MONTEZUMA QUAIL on the Mountain Loop Trail near Gomez Peak
in the Gila NF on January 16.
RS had found SAGE SPARROWS along Fuller Road which goes from the county line
on NM 464 to US 70 at mile post 9.5.
In Hidalgo County:
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Doņa Ana County:
JPa found a first winter ICELAND GULL on the Sunland Park racetrack pond
December 5. It stays with a HERRING GULL and seems to appear in the late
afternoon. JP advises that one needs to get permission to look for it from the
casino's office near the Jackpot Grill. JB says that the racetrack does NOT
want ANY birders there when the horses are racing on Tuesdays, Fridays,
Saturdays, and Sundays beginning at 12:15 p.m. The last report of the Iceland was by
PS on January 17. On January 14 JY reported the escaped MILITARY MACAW seen
again in the area.
At the southern day use area at the Leasburg State Park on January 24 MS and
JZ had a female YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER in a roadside cottonwood. CL on
February 3 at the park saw a calling DUSKY FLYCATCHER and two HOUSE WRENS with a
COMMON MERGANSER on Swan Pond with four CANADA GEESE.
At Garfield CL on February 4 saw a large flock of MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS.
CL saw the CACKLING GOOSE on Burn Lake on January 25. MS and JZ saw the
Cackling with 35 Canadas on February 3. They had an OSPREY there on February 2.
CL also saw the Cackling there on February 3 with a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT.
From Mesquite to Vado on January 23 CL found seven CINNAMON TEAL, a COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs had a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
appear through February 3. A female RUDDY GROUND-DOVE came to their yard and
has been seen occasionally through February 3. Also present has been a BALD
EAGLE flying along the Rio.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings. JB found the DUNLIN still present on February
2.
In Eddy County:
SW found a high count of 33 GREAT EGRETS with a SNOWY EGRET near Six-Mile
Dam near Otis on February 3.
On February 1 south of Whites City JB saw a flock of 20 WHITE-THROATED
SWIFTS.
In Lea County:
PM on February 2 had a BLUE JAY at the intersection of Texas Ave. and 8th
St. in Eunice.
SW on February 4 at Jal Lake had high counts of 12 PIED-BILLED GREBES and 22
CANVASBACKS. At Maddox Lake west of Hobbs there were another 40 Canvasbacks
and a CACKLING GOOSE with 17 Canadas. A MERLIN was at the Cooper Cemetery
north of Jal.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. They explore the Corrales bosque with Beverly Silfer on February 8; on
February 15 they hike Embudo Canyon with Jeanine Zenge, and on February 22
the new Albuquerque Open Space Visitor Center with Alice Weis.
The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays,
February 11, 18, and 25.
On Saturday, February 24, Southwest Audubon will bird the Lake Roberts area.

On February 24, Mesilla Valley Audubon will bird the Uvas Valley Area, the
Nutt Grasslands, and the Macho Creek drainage north of Cook's Peak. Contact

In the planning stage is a Sangre de Cristo trip to the Lower Rio Grande
Valley in Texas, from Wednesday to Sunday, February 7 to 11. Contact is Linda
