Thursday, February 8, 2007. 9:00 pm update. Compiled by Rick Schortinghuis

Rare Bird Alert for a male TUFTED DUCK
Wednesday, February 7
A TUFTED DUCK was seen again at the Cedar Hill Golf Course. It wasn't seen
at Kings Pond but it was seen at a different pond today. It was seen on the
pond down the eighth fairway. There is a large dam with a small arched stone
bridge. It was with a single Scaup and a Bufflehead.
Up Island in the Duncan area, there was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. It was seen at
the corner of Beverly Street and the Trans-Canada Highway. Also off Beverly
St. by the driving range there was a NORTHERN SHRIKE and a VIRGINIA RAIL.
A CALIFORNIA GULL was with THAYER'S GULLS and MEW GULLS at Clover Point.
Also there were 12 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 6 DUNLIN, 4 SANDERLINGS, 4 BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS and 5 BLACK TURNSTONES.
Tuesday, February 6
A pair of BLACK SCOTERS were at Island View Beach.
15 CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen at Rithet's Bog at the southeast side.
Monday, February 5
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen again at 905 Dunn Ave. near Swan Lake.
Also there was a MERLIN.
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen on the west side of the Cedar Hill Golf
Course just south of Kings Pond. It was associating with GOLDEN-CROWNED
SPARROWS.
30 MOURNING DOVES were seen at Welch Rd. and Mallard Rd. in the Martindale
area.
Sunday, February 4
A continuing rare bird alert for a male TUFTED DUCK seen again on
Kings Pond, which is at the end of Ascot Drive by the Cedar Hill Golf
Course.
A male EURASIAN TEAL was seen again at Maber Flats in Central Saanich. Also
there was a EURASIAN TEAL X GREEN-WINGED TEAL HYBRID.
A TOWNSEND'S WARBLER was seen again at 905 Dunn Ave. near Swan Lake.
Birders are welcome to look for this bird in the front yard. It has been
frequenting one of the suet feeders.
Saturday, February 3
Highlights of a VNHS field trip out to Sooke area were: 12 BRANT
GEESE off of Gordon Beach west of Sooke, also there were 25 RED
CROSSBILLS and 2 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS at Whiffin Spit.
200 WESTERN GREBES were seen off Esquimalt Lagoon.
5 CEADAR WAXWINGS were seen on Tillicum Rd. near Davida Ave.
