In Sandoval County:
CR checked the Corrales Bosque off Romero Road on January 21. He had an
EASTERN PHOEBE south of Romero Road. A SWAMP SPARROW was along the Rio.

In Santa Fe County:
JB had a SAW-WHET OWL calling at his home in Santa Fe on West Zia Road just
off of the Old Pecos Trail on January 23 at 8:45 p.m.
RE on January 20 had a SAW-WHET OWL about 2.5 miles up the road to the Santa
Fe Ski Basin on the Aspen Vista Service Road. One needs to snowshoe or ski
in.

In Colfax County:
DC on Stubblefield Lake on February 2 saw the two female LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
On February 3 at mile marker 8 on NM 445 north of Maxwell he found about 150
LAPLAND LONGSPURS.
DC on January 31 between the Raton Country Club on Gardiner Road saw three
LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS and a NORTHERN SHRIKE.

In Cibola County:
CJG on February 4 found a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK south of I-40 on NM 53 at San
Rafael.

In Bernalillo County:
JHa saw a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER in the lower parking lot of Sandia Crest on
January 29.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
ROSY-FINCHES. The SNC banding team reported 45 more banded on February 4, 28
BLACKS, one BROWN-CAPPED, and 16 GRAY-CROWNED (six were HEPBURN'S). So far this
winter they have banded 543: 399 Blacks, 137 Gray-crowned, and only seven
Brown-capped. (967 banded since January 2004).

In Valencia County:
JP and WW on February 10 again saw the WHITE-FACED IBIS with three CINNAMON
TEALS at the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen.

In Roosevelt County:
JB saw a pair of LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKENS at Milnesand on February 1.

In Chaves County:
JH on Bitter Lake Refuge on Unit 5 January 29 saw about 25 CACKLING GEESE
with Canadas.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio JP, HS, and WW saw the EASTERN
PHOEBE at the Flight Deck on February 3. On January 29 JNM and BW had an
immature HARRIS'S SPARROW at the Norton Blind.
BW and JNM on February 4 in a field north of the San Acacia exit on I-25 saw
a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE with Canadas.

In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park CL found the DIPPER still present on February 4 at
the dam with the immature YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. JP and WW saw the D
ipper on February 9. South of the park was an EASTERN PHOEBE.
CL on Caballo Lake on February 4 found an immature GLAUCOUS GULL at the
Percha Flats area with one BONAPARTE'S GULL and a HERRING GULL. DK on February 7
did not see the Glaucous, but found the Bonaparte's. GF on February 7 also
saw a HORNED GREBE. JP and WW on February 9 saw the Bonaparte's, but no
Glaucous. JP might have seen the Glaucous at dawn (still dark) the next day. An
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at Riverside Park below the dam.
CL had an OSPREY at the Oxbow Lake in Truth or Consequences on February 4.
At Paseo del Rio Park below the Elephant Butte dam JP, WW, and HS on February
3 had a male BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHER and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
At Elephant Butte Lake's Rock Canyon Marina on February 3 JP, HS, and WW saw
22 HERRING GULLS (mostly adults), two adult CALIFORNIA GULLS, the adult
THAYER'S GULL, an adult MEW GULL, and the adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL. GF on
the 7th found 18 Herrings and the Thayer's, while DK on February 7 saw the
Black-backed, 19 Herrings, three adult Californias, the Thayer's, and the adult
Mew. On February 10 JP and WW found only ten HERRING GULLS.

In Grant County:
RS has found SAGE SPARROWS along Fuller Road which goes from the county line
on NM 464 to US 70 at mile post 9.5.


In Hidalgo County:
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.

In Doņa Ana County:
JPa found a first winter ICELAND GULL on the Sunland Park racetrack pond
December 5. Also present is a HERRING GULL. The Iceland seems to appear in the
late afternoon. One needs to get permission to look for it from the
casino's office near the Jackpot Grill. The racetrack does NOT want ANY birders
there when the horses are racing on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
beginning at 12:15 p.m. DK again reported the Iceland at 5:30 p.m. on February
7 with an adult Herring almost hidden among the many Ring-bills. JP and WW
on February 9 did not find the rarer gulls. At the Rio there were 14
BLACK-NECKED STILTS and two BURROWING OWLS.
At the southern day use area at the Leasburg State Park CL on February 3 saw
a calling DUSKY FLYCATCHER and two HOUSE WRENS. MS, and JZ found the
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER still present on February 10. They saw it with JP and WW
February 9.
At Garfield CL on February 4 saw a large flock of MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS.
MS and JZ on Burn Lake in Las Cruces saw the CACKLING GOOSE with 35 Canadas
on February 3. CL on February 5 found 22 SNOWY EGRETS and two COMMON
MERGANSERS. JZ and MS had both geese species and nine NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS on
February 10. JP and WW also saw the Cackling Goose on February 9.
At the Corralitos Ranch pond west of Las Cruces JZ and MS on February 10 had
an EARED GREBE, CANVASBACKS, and RING-NECKED DUCKS. The pond can be seen
from the road, but one needs permission from Brian Foster to bird on the ranch.
CCBr on the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs Park east of the Organ Mts.
on February 10 saw two ACORN WOODPECKERS and a HUTTON'S VIREO. They had 150
LARK BUNTINGS on Dyer Road.
JZ and MS on the levee about a mile south of where Kit Carson Blvd. ends at
the levee had a HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER on February 4 along with six
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs had a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
appear through February 3. A female RUDDY GROUND-DOVE came to their yard and
has been seen occasionally through February 3. Also present has been a BALD
EAGLE flying along the Rio.

In Otero County:
JB found the DUNLIN still present at the Holloman Lakes on February 2. CL
and CBr saw it on February 6
At the sewage ponds in Tularosa they found a CACKLING GOOSE and four WOOD
DUCKS. Four HARRIS'S HAWKS were a mile south of Tularosa.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.

In Eddy County:
SW had a CALIFORNIA GULL at Brantley Lake on February 6.
SW found a high count of 33 GREAT EGRETS with a SNOWY EGRET near Six-Mile
Dam near Otis on February 3.
On February 1 south of Whites City JB saw a flock of 20 WHITE-THROATED
SWIFTS.

In Lea County:
PM on February 2 had a BLUE JAY at the intersection of Texas Ave. and 8th
St. in Eunice.
SW on February 4 at Jal Lake had a high count of 12 PIED-BILLED GREBES and
22 CANVASBACKS. At Maddox Lake west of Hobbs there were another 40
Canvasbacks and a CACKLING GOOSE with 17 Canadas. A MERLIN was at the Cooper
Cemetery
north of Jal.

In Texas near the border:
CCBr on February 10 at the Fort Bliss Sewage Ponds found a HARLAN'S HAWK,
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and a LEAST SANDPIPER.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. They explore on February 15 Embudo Canyon with Jeanine Zenge, and on
February 22 the new Albuquerque Open Space Visitor Center with Alice Weis.

The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays,
February 18 and 25.

On Saturday, February 24, Southwest Audubon will bird the Lake Roberts area.

On February 24, Mesilla Valley Audubon will bird the Uvas Valley Area, the
Nutt Grasslands, and the Macho Creek drainage north of Cook's Peak. Contact
