For Friday, September 16th this is Birdline Delaware, from the
Delaware Museum of Natural History in Greenville. I'm Andy Ednie,
glad to be with you this week. Armas Hill is away.
Two CONNECTICUT WARBLERS were found toady at White Clay Creek State
Park, north of Newark. One was found this morning. Observers looking
to relocate the original bird, found a second one in the same
location. The birds were found along the east side of the creek, near
the bench along the walking path, south of Hopkins's Bridge Rd. and
the before the pumping station.
A pair of PHILADELPHIA VIREO was also found at White Clay Creek this
week, along the west side of the creek, north of the Wedgewood Rd.
parking lot. Other birds seen on last week's field trip included:
BLUE-WINGED, PARULA, CHESTNUT-SIDED, MAGNOLIA, BLACK-THROATED GREEN,
and BLACKPOLL WARBLER, WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, and VEERY.
The year of the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER continues. A peak of 7
BUFFIES were found toady at the Broadkill Beach impoundments of the
Prime Hook NWR. 10 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, PECTORAL, and LEAST
SANDPIPERS were also seen at Broadkill Beach, on the east side of the
impoundment, where it's starting to turn green.
There have been some incredible numbers of BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS
across the river in New Jersey. A total of 60+ were found last
weekend at the Johnson Sod Farm. Today, 51 BUFF-BREASTED, 10 AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVER, 25 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and 1 UPLAND SANDPIPER were
seen at the sod farm off Olivet Rd. This is an easy site to find from
Delaware. Take the Delaware memorial Bridge across to Rt. 40. Drive
through Woodstown to the Pole Tavern circle. Turn south on Rt. 77,
the sod farm is on the left in Deerfield. Best viewing is off Olivet Rd.
There was a nice flight of COMMON NIGHTHAWKS on Thursday evening in
Brandywine Hundred. 30 were seen off the Concord Pike near
Talleyville. 21 were seen near dusk from the hawk watch at Brandywine
Creek State Park.
Some other birds at Brandywine Creek this week included BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE, BLUE-WINGED, and
CANADA WARBLER.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were reported this week, from opposite ends
of the state. One was located last week, at Oak Grove near Seaford.
Today, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was calling from the pines at the
entrance to the Pelleport campus of Christian Care in Greenville. If
you have a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH sighting, drop us a line, we'll keep
you informed about this year's invasion.
Call your bird reports to (302) 792-9591 or email me at
ednieap@wittnet.com. Thank you for calling. I'm Andy Ednie, good birding.
