This is the Michigan Statewide Bird Report for Thursday, August 4th 2005. It
is sponsored by the Holland Audubon Society.

In DELTA COUNTY on July 28th, a female RUFF* (a/k/a “REEVE*”), in worn
alternate plumage was observed feeding at the Portage Marsh. To my
knowledge, the RUFF* has not been relocated since July 28th. That same day,
9 WILLETS were seen at the Rapid River DNR boat launch. On July 28th & 29th,
2 adult RED-NECKED GREBES, with young, were seen at that place, representing
a rare breeding record for Michigan. At Peninsula Point in Stonington on
July 29th, a CAROLINA WREN (rare in U.P) was found.

In JACKSON COUNTY, at about 7:30am, July 29th, 2 previously reported
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS* were seen in a private pond off McCain Road,
which is south of the city of Jackson.

In MARQUETTE COUNTY, at Marquette Harbor on July 28th, a BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER was reported.

In MONROE COUNTY at the Point Mouilee State Game Area, a KING RAIL* was
observed briefly on July 30th. 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was another
highlight reported that day at Point Mouilee State Game Area. At the Erie
Marsh Preserve on July 28th, 1 immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was relocated, and
on July 30th, 2 immature LITLLE BLUE HERONS and 1 SNOWY EGRET were found. On
July 28th, an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was present in Cell #3 of Point Mouilee
SGA.

In WASHTENAW COUNTY, at the Sharonville State Game Area (SGA), July 29th,
several HENSLOW’S SPARROWS were reported in fields adjacent to the parking
lots along Sharon Valley Road. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen July 29th at
Sharon Valley SGA, at the corner of Sharon Valley and Hollow Roads.

In BAY COUNTY on July 30th, a single CATTLE EGRET was found off Jones Road,
just north of Arms Road. This location is east of Bay City, and north of
M-25. On August 3rd, a SNOWY EGRET was present at the Karn Plant in Bay
City.

In MUSKEGON COUNTY, in the east lagoon at the Muskegon Wastewater Facility
on July 30th, a WILSON’S PHALAROPE was present.

In BERRIEN COUNTY, multiple HENSLOW’S SPARROWS were heard on August 2nd
along Warren Woods Road, just east of Clear lake Road near Buchanan. On
August 1st, a PRAIRIE WARBLER was still present on its breeding grounds in
Warren Dunes State Park.

seeking bird photographs for publication in the Michigan Bird Survey
seasonal reports. Digital photos (jpeg format), photographs or
transparencies can be submitted to the MBNH editor Jim Granlund at

seasonal survey compiler for the appropriate season. Photos of common birds
as well as rarities are encouraged. Please include the name of photographer,
species depicted in the image, date location and a brief statement giving
MBNH permission to reproduce the image. All photographs used will have
appropriate acknowledgement. Birds photographed within Michigan only,
please.
