Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was recorded on

Extremely good numbers and variety of shore and wading birds were seen over the
weekend at reservoirs east of Calgary. Highlights were 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS at
Langdon reservoir reported Friday Sept 16 by Jim Davis, and 30 SANDERLINGS were seen
there on Sunday Sept 18 by Andrew Slater. Andrew reported large numbers in the NW
corner of the Reservoir, plus 500 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 400 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 30
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 60 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 20 STILT SANDPIPERS and 50 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS.
Both he and Simone Marler watched an immature PEREGRINE FALCON flush all the birds
there in the afternoon.

At the NW corner of Kitsim Reservoir W of Hwy 36, W of Brooks on the afternoon of
Sept 18, Terry Korolyk observed 3000 DOWITCHERS, mostly LONG-BILLED, 140
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 130 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LEAST SANDPIPERS, and 4 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS.

Langdon Reservoir is just E of Hwy 797 on Hwy 22X. There is a parking area at the S
end off Hwy 22X. To reach the NW corner, follow the first northward road east of the
town of Langdon southward to the parking area at the dyke.
To reach the NW corner of Kitsim Reservoir, follow the road along the W edge of the
irrigation canal on the S side of Hwy 539 after the Hwy bends SW, W of the Hwy 36
junction.

There has been only one recent warbler report. Jim Davis observed a PALM WARBLER in
his backyard in Douglasdale at 6pm on Thurs. Sept 15.
Jim also reported 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS N of Langdon Reservoir on Fri Sept 16.

Terry Korolyk reported large numbers of SWAINSON'S HAWKS were feeding on
grasshoppers on Sept 18 N of Lamond. At least 150 and probably more birds were in
fields SW of the Hwys 539 & 45 junction.
