This is a daily summary of reports from the Arcata Bird Box
BirdBox, sponsored by the City of Arcata and Redwood Region Audubon Society,
compiled 18 September 2005 at 8:40 p.m. Most birds reported are in Humboldt
County
unless otherwise noted. Birds in caps under the “highlights”
section has about 50 (plus or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern
California as defined in Stan Harris’s “Northwestern California Birds” (3rd

In western SISKIYOU COUNTY Northern Pygmy-Owl, a Lincoln's and a Fox Sparrow
were at the Big Bar Access on the Klamath River, upriver about a mile, from
Slate Creek. There was also an adult BALD EAGLE and Pileated Woodpecker
present (Chet Ogan).
There was a belated report of 2 LAYSAN ALBATROSS seen a couple of miles
south of the Humboldt Bay entrance; they could possibly be seen from shore
if scoping from the North or South Jetty (Bill Radstrom (?) fide Gary
Friedricksen).

In SISKIYOU COUNTY a WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, Common Yellowthroat, and
Ruffed Grouse were along Ti Creek Road north of Somes Bar( Tom Leskiw).

At a private residence on Mill Creek Lane, east of Trinidad, a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK took a Gray Jay from a feeder! A hatch-year female PRAIRIE WARBLER
was off of Stagecoach Road in Trinidad, in between Rainbow Lane and mailbox
849 (Melody Hamilton).
At the Eel River wildlife area (ERWA) a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was present in
the dead willow trees west of the old barn in the slough. Also present at
ERWA were a continuing STILT SANDPIPER, 130 Black-bellied Plovers, 5
Semipalmated Plovers, 1 Long-billed Curlew, 1 Willet, 60 Marbled Godwits, 30
Greater Yellowlegs, 90 Lesser Yellowlegs, 20 Long-billed Dowitchers, 3,000
Least Sandpipers, 150 Western Sandpipers, 1 Dunlin, and 1 Red-necked
Phalarope (David Fix).
At Mad River County Park there was a hatch-year CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER
three-fourths of the way down on the main trail (northwest of main parking
lot) near the heavy patch of scouring rush (David Fix).
At Shay Park in Arcata a large flock of western migrants consisted of 50+
Yellow Warblers, 10 Warbling Vireos, 3 Black-throated Gray Warblers, a
Townsend's Warbler, 2 Orange-crowned Warblers, a Wilson's Warbler, and a
Western Tanager (David Fix).

Today a MERLIN was present at Shay Park. All other species and numbers of
the large flock of western migrants seen by D. Fix were still present. About
20+ Townsend's Warblers were an increase from the day before (Rob Fowler).
At the Orick Dump and BLACKPOLL WARBLER was present. At the "Oxbow Patch",
east of the Redwood Creek mouth, a briefly seen warbler was probably a
HOODED WARBLER (Ken Irwin).
A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was found in the chickadee flock at Woodley Island,
near the large patch of cottonwoods (John Hunter).
16 Sept.

One or two HERMIT WARBLERS were in a back yard in Bayside where a few
migrants of this species is expected every September (David Fix).
At the Eel River Wildlife Area there was a WILLOW FLYCATCHER in the willows
north of the northwestern most pond. Also, there was a probable BLUE-HEADED
VIREO in the same willows; the observer saw many marks that were good for
this species but didn’t get complete views. At Cock Robin Island, near the
mouth of the Eel River, there was a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER and a BAIRD’S
SANDPIPER. The observers first Golden-crowned Sparrow was in his backyard in
Eureka (Sean McAllister).

In MENDOCINO COUNTY a YELLOW WAGTAIL(!) was found at Virgin Creek Beach on
the evening of the 16th and confirmed on the morning of the 17th. It was
seen along the creek and was found foraging amongst much of the washed up
kelp on the beach (Ron LeValley fide Dorothy “Toby” Tobkin). The bird was
also seen from around 6:30 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m. by about 8 observers (Rob
Fowler). This bird is a 1st county record and, if accepted by the California
Bird Records Committee, will be the 400th species recorded in Mendocino
county, the last coastal county in California to achieve such a feat.
At the Orick Dump a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and a BLUE-HEADED VIREO were
found. At the base of Bald Hills Road a SUMMER TANAGER was found (Ken Irwin).
A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was found on the V-Street Loop in the slough that is
found about ½ way on the loop. A RED KNOT was observed where Samoa crosses
Mad River Slough. The observer also reported Golden-crowned and Lincoln’s
Sparrows in good numbers out on the North Spit and at Shay Park in Arcata.
All 3 species of TEAL were present at the Gearheart Marsh at the Arcata
Marsh, 3 “MYRTLE” Yellow-rumped Warblers were at Klopp Lake and, lastly,
50-60 American Pipits were along Jackson Ranch Road in the Arcata Bottoms
(Scott Carey).

A MERLIN was seen at the Elk River Wildlife Area in Eureka (Tom Leskiw).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER was found along Lower Lake Road
near Fort Dick (Alan Barron). Call Alan at 707.465.8904 for more information.
Of the daily finds in Orick, a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at the Shoreline
Market (Ken Irwin).
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER and the observers sixth WILLOW FLYCATCHER for his
backyard this fall was found off of Heather Lane in Arcata (Rob Fowler).
