This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for February 22, 2007,

Red-shouldered Hawk, Thayer's Gull, Mew Gulls, Harris's Sparrows.
With warmer weather and melting snows, many of the frozen waters are now
open again.

In Sandoval County:
CR and SD on February 17 on the Perea Nature Trail at San Ysidro saw a PYGMY
OWL with EASTERN BLUEBIRDS at the Rio Grande bridge on NM 550.
In San Miguel County:
CB found Crane Lake and Brown Marsh on the Las Vegas Refuge open with
adjacent McAllister Lake mostly open. The back road by the marsh can be
treacherous if muddy (from personal experience!). There has been some thawing at
Storrie Lake. On February 17 he had LAPLAND LONGSPURS flying over the refuge. On
February 10 CR and BN found CACKLING GEESE on Crane Lake.
In Mora County:
On February 10 CR and BN found a HERRING GULL on Calley's Lake. This pond
is five miles south of Wagon Mound. Earlier it was frozen.
In Colfax County:
On Stubblefield Lake the female LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen by CR and BN on
February 11. The lakes in the area should now be thawing out.
On February 10 they saw a flying SHORT-EARED OWL that was flying along NM
445 2.5 miles before its junction with I-25 south of Raton.
CR and BN ON February 10 saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK south of Springer.
On February 11 they saw four BLUE JAYS in Cimarron with three DIPPERS in the
Cimarron Canyon area to the west and a NORTHERN SHRIKE in Eagle Nest.
In Cibola County:
CJG on February 17 on the saddle between Mount Taylor and La Mosca Peak at
10,700 feet saw a flock of up to 20 ROSY FINCHES.
Near the county bldg. In Grants at dusk he heard a BLACK PHOEBE on February
17. There was a FERRUGINOUS HAWK along NM 53 south of San Rafael and he had
on February 19 he saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flying over the El Morro Natl. Mon
.
In Bernalillo County:
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
ROSY-FINCHES. The SNC banding team reported 93 more banded on February 11, 74
BLACKS and 19 GRAY-CROWNED (12 were HEPBURN'S). So far this winter they have
banded 636: 473 Blacks, 156 Gray-crowned, and only seven Brown-capped. (1060
banded since January 2004).
In Valencia County:
JP and WW on February 10 again saw the WHITE-FACED IBIS with three CINNAMON
TEALS at the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen.
In Torrance County:
CR on February 18 had two LAPLAND LONGSPURS west of McIntosh.
In Guadalupe County:
CR on February 18 had RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS on Santa Rosa Lake.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio JP, HS, and WW saw the EASTERN
PHOEBE at the Flight Deck on February 3. MSc on February 11 saw a
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on the east side of the Marsh Loop and a SWAMP SPARROW on the two-way
road. MG had two CRISSAL THRASHERS on the Canyon Trail on February 16. LS
on February 17 reported at the visitor center the WHITE-THROATED and SONG
SPARROWS at the visitor center, TREE SWALLOWS flying over, with 200 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS at the Norton Blind and the four WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. Also
present were a HARLAN'S HAWK, a MERLIN, and the flock of MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park MG found the DIPPER still present on February 16.
CR and crew had a ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW on February 19.
CL on Caballo Lake on February 4 found an immature GLAUCOUS GULL at the
Percha Flats area with one BONAPARTE'S GULL and a HERRING GULL. DK on February 7
did not see the Glaucous. GF on February 7 also saw a HORNED GREBE. CR,
CW, and MH on February 19 saw two BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
CL had an OSPREY at the Oxbow Lake in Truth or Consequences on February 4.
At Elephant Butte Lake's Rock Canyon Marina GF on the 7th found 18 HERRING
GULLS and the THAYER'S, while DK on February 7 saw the adult LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, 19 Herrings, three adult CALIFORNIAS, the THAYER'S, and the adult
Mew. On February 11 BH, GF, and PM saw the Thayer's and TWO MEW GULLS with 21
Herrings. CR, CW, and MH on February 19 saw seven Herrings and a possible
second winter GLAUCOUS GULL (or hybrid with Herring?).
In Hidalgo County:
In Clanton Canyon GB reported two coveys of MONTEZUMA QUAIL, a few ARIZONA
WOODPECKERS, and a LONG-EARED OWL on February 18. In the grasslands around
Cloverdale there was a GOLDEN EAGLE, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, both longspurs, and
four BAIRD'S SPARROWS. There was a GILA WOODPECKER at Dunagan's Crossing and
a BURROWING OWL just south of Animas. Some of these areas may be on the
off-limits Gray Ranch. CCBr and CL on February 18 saw a PEREGRINE FALCON at
Dunagan's Crossing and two of the owls in Clanton Canyon.
On February 3 RS photographed a DUNLIN at the playa west of Lordsburg near
the Animas exit.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Doņa Ana County:
CL, MS, and JZ had an adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on February 11 along the Rio
Grande north of their home near Radium Springs. From NM 185 at mile 12.5
take an unmarked road going west (it's the first road north of Francis Way).
Go west .1 mile to the levee. Hike along the Rio for about 1/4 mile. It was
seen there by MB and NP on February 15. To get to 185 take the Radium Springs
exit 19 off I-25. It has not been seen again.
CBr and CL on February 17 saw two SPRAGUE'S PIPITS along county road C01
west of Las Cruces.
JZ and MS on February 17 had a HARRIS'S SPARROW 4.5 miles north of Hatch on
B.B. Romig Rd. near an ostrich farm.
At the Leasburg State Park MS and JZ found the YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
still present on February 10. CL had it on February 11. At nearby Swan Pond on
February 16 CL found a male HOODED MERGANSER. On February 17 JZ and MS found
three females of the mergansers.
CL found 25 to 30 LONG-EARED OWLS roost at Randal's Pool on the west side of
the Rio near Sunland Park in a dense thicket. JZ found the roost on
February 16.
JN had another EASTERN PHOEBE near his home west of Mesilla and found the
VERMILION FLYCATCHER had returned after a brief absence on February 16.
CBr at the Mesiila ValLey Bosque Park (Old Refuge) on February 16 had two
female HOODED MERGANSERS, one or two ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, a couple of
YELLOWTHROATS, four SWAMP SPARROWS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, and five HERMIT THRUSHES.
MS and JZ on Burn Lake in Las Cruces saw the CACKLING GOOSE and nine
NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS on February 10. CL on February 21 at the lake saw a PEREGRINE
FALCON and 14 SNOWY EGRETS.
CCBr on the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs Park east of the Organ Mts.
on February 10 saw two ACORN WOODPECKERS and a HUTTON'S VIREO.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs had a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
appear through February 3. A female RUDDY GROUND-DOVE came to their yard and
has been seen occasionally through February 3. Also present has been a BALD
EAGLE flying along the Rio, seen by CL on February 11.
In Otero County:
CL and CBr saw the DUNLIN still present at the Holloman Lakes on February
13. They saw a CALIFORNIA GULL there on February 12.
At the sewage ponds in Tularosa they found a CACKLING GOOSE and four WOOD
DUCKS. Four HARRIS'S HAWKS were a mile south of Tularosa.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Lea County:
SW on February 4 at Jal Lake had a high count of 22 CANVASBACKS. At Maddox
Lake west of Hobbs there were another 40 Canvasbacks and a CACKLING GOOSE. A
MERLIN was at the Cooper Cemetery north of Jal.
