This is the Thursday, March 1, 2007 Missouri Rare Bird
Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society of
Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the

KANSAS CITY AREA

On Thursday, February 22, Kristi Mayo observed a
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK along the main road near the boat
ramp at Watkins Mill SP (Clay Co.).

On Monday, February 26, Bob Fisher observed a male
LONG-TAILED DUCK in winter plumage at Smithville Lake
(Clay Co.). This bird was last reported being
observed by Larry Lade from the Crow’s Creek
Campground area on Wednesday, February 28.
Additionally on Monday, February 26, Bob Fisher
located a NORTHERN SHRIKE near Shelter 4 in the Crow’s
Creek Picnic Area. On Tuesday, Febraury 27, Linda and
John Zempel observed a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER present on
the lake.


ST. LOUIS AREA

On Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25,
those who were willing to put up with the rain and
gusty winds at Riverlands MBS (St. Charles Co.) were
finally rewarded with many species of gulls showing up
on the MO side of the river. Species included adult
and immature THAYER’S GULLS, at least two adult
ICELAND GULLS, multiple adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, at least two first-winter and two second-winter
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, and at least one first
winter GLAUCOUS GULL. As of Thursday, March 1,
thousands of gulls were still present, but only an
adult THAYER’S GULL and a first winter GLAUCOUS GULL
could be found.

Mick Richardson reported seeing the MERLIN on Sunday,
February 25, that has been frequenting the duck
hunting club along the road that leads from Riverlands
Way to the Edward and Pat Jones – Confluence Point SP
(St. Charles Co.)


SOUTHEAST

At the home of Wes and Claudia Mueller, Cape
Girardeau, an immature RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues
visiting their feeder since late October 2006. Wes
has been able to keep the feeders thawed at this
point. If interested in obtaining directions to view

NORTHEAST

On Thursday, February 22, a single NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWL was located in Knox County. A follow up trip by
Patrick Harrison to the same location on Friday,
February 23, produced 2 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS. At
least one of the Saw-whet owls was still present on
Wednesday, February 28, when observed by Phil Wire and
Brad Jacobs. For obtaining directions to observe

On Monday, February 26, Steve Kinder reported a single
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK present at Squaw Creek NWR
(Chariton Co.).


NORTHWEST

On Friday, February 23, Larry Lade observed 4
TRUMPETER SWANS at Squaw Creek NWR (Holt Co.).
Additionally, Larry observed not 1, but 2 PILEATED
WOODPECKERS, in the wooded section at the north end of
Squaw Creek NWR.

On Monday, February 26, and Tuesday, February 27,
Larry Lade observed 2 TRUMPETER SWANS and 1 TUNDRA
SWAN at Lake Contrary (Buchanan Co.).
