This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday March 1, 2007 with reports of BARROW’ GOLDENEYE, possible
THAYER’S GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, seasonal and local reports of interest
and announcements.
.
At Sandy Hook a male and female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE were found in
Horseshoe Cove Feb 25. To look for the birds park at the small lot
opposite the south maintenance area north of the Ranger Station, walk
north and take the gated service road to the left (west) to the bay.
Look for the birds here. RED-NECKED GREBES were found at here and
near the false hook the same day. A free, detailed birding map of
Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for
daily reports.
.
At Round Valley Reservoir a possible THAYER’S GULL was seen at the
main boat Launch Area Feb 27. Up to 4 RED-NECKED GREBES continue
there this week; 24 REDHEADS, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, and RED-THROATED
LOON were noted Feb 28. GLAUCOUS GULL, 2 ICELAND GULLS, and 42
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were tallied Feb 27. The best times to
look for the gulls are early morning or late in the day: the birds
roost there and disperse elsewhere to feed.

Silver Lake in Belmar, a flock of up to 19 REDHEADS at Lake
Takanassee in Long Branch, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES at Shark River Marina,

.
Just north of Brigantine NWR, 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were viewed from the
end of Mott’s Creek Rd Feb 24.
.
In Bayonne a male EURASIAN WIGEON was detected in a marshy spot
behind the A& P Store Feb 25-Mar 1 and a SHORT-EARED OWL was found at
the Bayonne Golf Course Feb 25. To view the wigeon exit the NJ
Turnpike at 14A. After the tolls take 440 south to the last exit in
NJ before crossing the Bayonne Bridge. Make a right at the end of
the exit, go under the bridge and make the first left before the
light into the shopping center. Go around the supermarket to the back.
