This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

Belated Report: On the 16th of Feb. 13 EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES were seen at
the southeast end of the airstrip at Shelter Cove (Robert "Woods" Sutherland
fide David Fix).

The HARRIS'S SPARROW continued at the feeder at 1087 12th Street in Arcata.
Also present were 3 PINE SISKINS and 1 SLATE-COLORED JUNCO (Scott Carey).
A male ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD was seen near the intersection of Tierra Vista
and Hidden Pond Roads in McKinleyville (Gary Lester).
A NASHVILLE WARLBER visited a yard at 141 G Street in Arcata (Elias Elias).
In the Arcata Bottoms a ROSS'S GOOSE was seen in a flock of ALEUTIAN
CACKLING GEESE on the the north side of Foster Road, just west of Seidel
Road. An adult BALD EAGLE was north of the western end of Foster Road. A
male MERLIN was seen today and on the 19th in the vicinity of Heather Lane
in Arcata. The HARRIS'S SPARROW was seen at the feeder in Arcata near midday
(Rob Fowler).
23 Feb.

The CRESTED CARACARA* was seen near the corner of Centerville and Meridian
in the Ferndale Bottoms (Gary Sellers).
Nine-hundred CACKLING GEESE (minima) and 1 ROSS'S GOOSE was seen in the
field to the south of the visitor center at Humboldt Bay NWR. Several
thousand MARBLED GODWITS and WILLETS were seen in the field to the north of
the visitor center (Paul Springer, Steve Mlodinow).
24 Feb.

A report came in from various areas in Humboldt County. One BURROWING OWL
was seen in between the Redwood National Park visitor center and the mouth
of Redwood Creek. A BALD EAGLE was seen at Freshwater Lagoon. At Stone
Lagoon 94 CANVASBACKS were seen. Seven THAYER'S GULLS were seen just south
of the Columberg (spelling?) Dairy on Mad River Road in the Arcata Bottoms;
another 7 THAYER'S GULLS were along Goble Lane in the Ferndale Bottoms. One
1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the intersection of Fulmor & Goble Lane
in the Ferndale Bottoms, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS was along Dillon Road, and 16
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were in a field along Seven Mile Slough Road (David
Fix, Steve Mlodinow).
Another report came in that was not reported to the birdbox??? One SAY'S
PHOEBE was along Centerville Road (Ferndale Bottoms) and another SAY'S
wasalong Copenhagen Road (Loleta Bottoms). One VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW was off
of Centerville Road (Kerry Ross), 3 more VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were seen at
the pond at the intersection of Copenhagen and Eel River Drive with 65 TREE
SWALLOWS; probably over 200 TREE SWALLOWS were throughout the Ferndale
Bottoms. The AMERICAN TREE SPARROW continued along the previously mentioned
location along the V Street Loop and a female TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD was in
the blackbird flock just west of the Moxon Dairy (Rob Fowler, Kerry Ross,
Daryl Coldren, Matt Wachs).

The AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was seen in the same location along the V Street
Loop and the HARRIS'S SPARROW continued at the aforementioned location in
Arcata (Ken Burton via NWCALBIRD).
26 Feb.

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a third cycle SLATY-BACKED GULL* was found roosting with
other gulls on top of the barn at the Alexandre Dairy and was confirmed and
photographed by others. This is a first DEL NORTE COUNTY record (Lucas Brug,
Joe Gartland; Alan Barron fide Rob Fowler).
27 Feb.

The DEL NORTE COUNTY SLATY-BACKED GULL* was refound in the afternoon ; it
was seen in pastures on the Tryon Ranch, just south of the the Alexandre
Dairy and north of Mosely Road (Alan Barron, Kerry Ross and Tom Leskiw).
A RING-NECKED PHEASANT (most likely an escapee) was seen along the V Street
Loop. One ROSS'S GOOSE was seen with Aleutian Cackling Geese in the
vicinity. In Arcata, a GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on the top of the Co-op. A
SHORT-EARED OWL was seen midday along the V Street Loop (Michael Morris).
