In San Miguel County:
CB found Crane Lake and Brown Marsh on the Las Vegas Refuge open with
adjacent McAllister Lake mostly open. The back road by the marsh can be
treacherous if muddy (from personal experience!). There has been some thawing at
Storrie Lake.
In Colfax County:
DC on February 23 found Stubblefield Lake 66% open. He saw four BALD
EAGLES, the one (or two) LONG-TAILED DUCK, a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, and five male
RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS. He found Lake 13 on the Maxwell Refuge still
frozen with a NORTHERN SHRIKE nearby. There were four LONG-EARED OWLS at the
roost in the thicket near the 't' with Hwys. A5 and A1. On February 25 DR
reported three of the long-tailed ducks on Stubblefield.
On February 11 CR and BN saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE in Eagle Nest.
In Cibola County:
CJG on February 17 on the saddle between Mount Taylor and La Mosca Peak at
10,700 feet saw a flock of up to 20 ROSY FINCHES.
Near the county bldg. in Grants at dusk he heard a BLACK PHOEBE on February
17.
In Bernalillo County:
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
ROSY-FINCHES. The SNC banding team reported that so far this winter they have
banded 636: 473 Blacks, 156 Gray-crowned, and only seven Brown-capped. (1060
banded since January 2004).
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio LS on February 17 reported at
the visitor center the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, TREE SWALLOWS flying over, with
200 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS at the Norton Blind and the four WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE. Also present were a HARLAN'S HAWK, a MERLIN, and the flock of MOUNTAIN
BLUEBIRDS.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park MG found the DIPPER still present on February 16.
CBr on February 25 found three tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, but
missed the Dipper. He saw a few TREE and ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS with two BALD
EAGLES south of the park and a female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.
At Caballo Lake at the Percha Flats area CR, CW, and MH on February 19 saw
two BONAPARTE'S GULLS. CBr saw little on February 25.
At Elephant Butte Lake's Rock Canyon Marina on February 11 BH, GF, and PM
saw the THAYER'S GULL and TWO MEW GULLS with 21 HERRING GULLS. CR, CW, and MH
on February 19 saw seven Herrings.
In Grant County:
The February 24 field trip to Roberts Lake produced CANVASBACKS and
REDHEADS, with over 100 PINYON JAYS nearby.
EL had the MEXICAN MALLARDS at the Tyrone Sewage Ponds on February 25.
CN had a few EASTERN BLUEBIRDS in a bluebird flock in the Gila Valley on
February 27. SANDHILL CRANES were at the Gila River Farm near Cliff.
In Hidalgo County:
JBi had a flock of AVOCETS on the playa west of Lordsburg near the Animas
exit of I-10 on February 22.
In Clanton Canyon GB reported two coveys of MONTEZUMA QUAIL on February 18.
In the grasslands around Cloverdale there was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, both
longspurs, and four BAIRD'S SPARROWS. There was a GILA WOODPECKER at Dunagan's
Crossing. Some of these areas may be on the off-limits Gray Ranch. CCBr
and CL on February 18 saw a PEREGRINE FALCON at Dunagan's Crossing and two
LONG-EARED OWLS in Clanton Canyon.
RS had a Richardson's type MERLIN on NM 464 north of Lordsburg on February
22.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
BC on February 23 reported a western type immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at
the pond at the Pecan Park Mobile Home Park east of Deming. It has not been
reported further.
In Doņa Ana County:
CL, MS, and JZ had an adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on February 11 along the Rio
Grande north of their home near Radium Springs. From NM 185 at mile 12.5
take an unmarked road going west (it's the first road north of Francis Way).
Go west .1 mile to the levee. Hike along the Rio for about 1/4 mile. It was
seen there by MB and NP on February 15. To get to 185 take the Radium Springs
exit 19 off I-25. It has not been seen again.
JN has had an adult LEWIS'S WOODPECKER (photo) at his home near Mesilla on
February 23. It has been seen by CBr, CL, MS, and JZ, and was still present
on February 25. Also found there were a SWAMP SPARROW, the male VERMILION
FLYCATCHER, two MARSH and two HOUSE WRENS, and a male PHAINOPEPLA. Contact Josh

CBr and CL on February 17 saw two SPRAGUE'S PIPITS along county road C01
west of Las Cruces.
JZ and MS on February 17 had a HARRIS'S SPARROW 4.5 miles north of Hatch on
B.B. Romig Rd. near an ostrich farm. CL found it on February 24, along with
two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. CL on February 26 had a CATTLE EGRET at
University and Avenida de Mesilla near Mesilla Park.
CL on February 24 had large flocks of swallows over Las Cruces, with
ROUGH-WINGED, TREE, CLIFF, and a BANK.
At Swan Pond on February 16 CL found a male HOODED MERGANSER. On February
17 JZ and MS found three females of the mergansers.
CL found 25 to 30 LONG-EARED OWLS roost at Randal's Pool on the west side of
the Rio near Sunland Park in a dense thicket. JZ found the roost on
February 16.
CBr at the Mesiila ValLey Bosque Park (Old Refuge) on February 16 had two
female HOODED MERGANSERS, one or two ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, a couple of
YELLOWTHROATS, four SWAMP SPARROWS, and an EASTERN PHOEBE. CL on February 25 found
the Swamp Sparrows and female Hooded Mergansers.
On Burn Lake in Las Cruces CL on February 21 saw a PEREGRINE FALCON and 14
SNOWY EGRETS.
On the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs Park east of the Organ Mts. on
February 25 JZ and MS found a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, a singing OLIVE WARBLER, the
two ACORN WOODPECKERS, and a pair of HUTTON'S VIREOS.
MS saw a fly-over flock of 18 COMMON GRACKLES over Conway and McDowell in
Mesilla Park on February 23.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs have had a female ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD appear through February 23.
In Otero County:
CL and CBr saw the DUNLIN still present at the Holloman Lakes on February
13. On February 22 CL and CBr had three LONG-EARED OWLS, a ROUGH-WINGED
SWALLOW, with the Dunlin still seen.
At the sewage ponds in Tularosa they found four WOOD DUCKS. Four HARRIS'S
HAWKS were a mile south of Tularosa.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
SW reminds that CAVE SWALLOWS have been back at the Carlsbad Caverns since
the first week of February.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On March 1 there is a morning talk in the Four Hills Open Space area
with Melissa Howard; on March 8 to Bosque del Apache with Sylvis Fee; on March
15 to the Sandia Mts. Hawkwatch site with Pat Frnklin-Henden; on March 22 to
Bear (Oso) Canyon with Rebecca Gracey; and on March 29 at the Rio Grande
Nature Center with Allison Schacht.
The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays,
on March 4, March 11, March 18, and March 25.
On March 3 Central Audubon will explore the Bernardo Refuge and Bosque del

On March 10 Sangre de Cristo Audubon will bird at the Rio Grande Nature
