Welcome to the Birding Hotline for interior Alaska as of September 19,
2005.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER flew over the Alaska Bird
Observatory banding station at Creamer's Refuge on Saturday,
September 17.
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was seen at a feeder on Love Road,
off of Chena Hotsprings Rd, the same day. Two more RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHS were at a feeder on Goldizen Rd on September 13:
A juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on Gilmore St. the
same day.
A SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER made a one day appearance at the gravel
pits at South Cushman Street on Saturday, September 10.
A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and an AMERICAN PIPIT flew by the
barn at Creamer's Refuge on September 7:
A BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen at South Cushman Street the same
day. Another BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen at the ABO banding
station on September 6:
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL is being seen on a regular basis along
the pipeline right of was accessed at Love Road.
Upcoming events include:
Plan to attend Alaska Bird Observatory annual Open House. From 11 AM
to 5 PM on October 15 at the ABO Center for Education & Research (at
Wedgewood Resort). There will be activities, refreshments, free posters,
door prizes, and a BIG sale in the gift shop. Special programs that day
include Owls of Interior Alaska from Noon - 2 PM. Meet live owls and
learn about these special birds through crafts, activities, and stories.
2:30 - 5:00 PM. Will be an Open House Reception. Enjoy
refreshments, peruse displays about ABO's programs, tour the facility,
visit with staff, and take our bird trivia and identification challenges.
3:00 PM. Take a leisurely walk on Creamer's Refuge with ABO
senior biologist, Dr. Susan Sharbaugh. Learn how plants and animals
survive our harsh winters. Free!
