EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, March 2.
The over-wintering TOWNSEND'S WARBLER at 6 Laurel Street in Cambridge
was still present there at least as recently as yesterday.
Signs of spring were widely reported this week. They included single
EASTERN
PHOEBES in Uxbridge and Harwich, 4 displaying AMERICAN WOODCOCKS
in Falmouth, a pair of displaying NORTHERN GOSHAWKS and CROWS
carrying
nesting material in Middleboro, displaying pairs of RED-SHOULDERED
HAWKS
in Duxbury and Pembroke, numerous reports of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS
and COMMON GRACKLES, and single KILLDEER in Concord and at the
Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport.
Reports this week from various points around Cape Ann included 3
BRANT, 1
REDHEAD, a KING EIDER in East Gloucester, another KING EIDER off Gap
Head in Rockport, roughly a 100 HARLEQUIN DUCKS in Rockport, 81
HORNED
GREBES, 38 RED-NECKED GREBES, the resident EARED GREBE at Niles
Beach in East Gloucester, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL, 7 ICELAND GULLS,
1 GLAUCOUS GULL, 66 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, and 92 BLACK
GUILLEMOTS.
In Millbury there were 5 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
30 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 TURKEY VULTURE, and 1 WINTER WREN,
and miscellaneous reports have included a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE off Shaw Road in Fairhaven, a RED-THROATED LOON in Lakeville,
4 NORTHERN HARRIERS and 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at the Daniel
Webster Sanctuary in Marshfield, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a FOX SPARROW,
and a COMMON GRACKLE at the Stony Brook Sanctuary in Norfolk, a
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL in Worcester, 2 TURKEY VULTURES
and 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in Essex, and 3 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, 2 SNOWY OWLS, and 1 SHORT-EARED OWL at Plum Island.
