Welcome to the Birding Hotline for interior Alaska as of March 5, 2007.
A SLATE-COLORED JUNCO was seen at a feeder at Love Road on
March 3. Another SLATE-COLORED JUNCO is being seen at the feeders
at ABO.
The first sign of spring has arrived with several small flocks of SNOW
BUNTINGS that have been reported near the UAF campus in the last
week. These are the traditional first migrants to arrive.
A BALD EAGLE was sighted eating a duck near University Ave. on
February 28.
A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was seen near Antoinette Street on
February 22. A GREAT-HORNED OWL was heard hooting behind
ABO the same day.
A NORTHERN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen at a feeder
in the Cripple Creek area on February 15.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL is being seen along Goldmine Trail.
A BALD EAGLE was sighted on Philips Field Road near 1st Avenue
on February 9. Also on the 9th, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen carrying
a vole near the Crane Pond at Creamer's Refuge.
Another NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen flying over the Creamer's
Field mushing trails on February 8.
Upcoming events include:
An Owl listening field trip will take place on March 24 - Meet at the
Creamer's Field Farmhouse at 8 pm to listen to recorded owl calls and
then carpool to hopeful listening sites. A map of locations for listening
will be available.
Dress appropriately to be standing outside for up to 20 minutes at
each stop. For more information, contact Tom Green at 452-6370 o

The Arctic Audubon Board Meeting will take place on March 29 at
5:30 pm, in Room 300 of the Natural Science Facility; at UAF
The next Arctic Audubon Program will take place on April 9 at 7:00 PM
at the Noel Wien Library. Join Tricia Wurtz for a presentation on invasive
plants.
Electronic Recycling will take place on April 21 & 28 from 10 am-4 pm.

The Spring Migration Celebration will take place April 28 from Noon-4:00
pm.
Events will be held at Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, the
Alaska
Bird Observatory, and Alaska Public Lands Information Center (downtown
Fairbanks).
A Waterfowl field trip will take place on May 5. Meet at Creamer's Refuge
back by the big barns at 9 am. Bring binoculars, a snack, and rubber boots
if you have them.
May 12 is a Shorebird field trip. Meet at Creamer's Refuge back by the big
barns at 9 am. Bring binoculars, a snack, and rubber boots if you have
them.
