Good Birding!

27 Feb.
-----------
In TRINITY COUNTY a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was seen at the Skunk Point Picnic
Area, a miles east of Del Loma on Highway 299 (Scott Carey).

28 Feb.
-----------
In DEL NORTE COUNTY the 3rd cycle SLATY-BACKED GULL* continued in the Smith
River Bottoms; it was seen late morning along Lower Lake Road, about a 1/2
mile north of Moseley Road (Alan Barron, Ken Burton).

The SLATY-BACKED GULL was not seen in the afternoon but a total of 6
GLAUCOUS GULLS were observed in various locations in the Smith River Bottoms
and Crescent City Harbor (Rob Fowler, Daryl Coldren).

A SAY'S PHOEBE was seen near the easternmost barn on the the V street Loop
(Pablo Herrera).

Two SWAMP SPARROWS were found at Hiller Park in McKinleyville. From the
parking lot take the walkway north to the gate that goes tot the new
drainage ponds. There are a lot of berries on the left and that's where the
sparrows were seen (Linda Doerflinger).

1 Mar.
-----------
The 3rd cycle SLATY-BACKED GULL* was still present in DEL NORTE COUNTY. The
bird was seen at the gull roost at the Alexandre Dairy and was also seen on
the ranch south of Tryon Creek (Alan Barron fide Gary Lester).

A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen off of Mad River road in the Arcata Bottoms (Rob
Fowler).

observers first RUFOUS and ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRDS of the season (Rob Fowler).

At least one SWAMP SPARROW was still present in Hiller Park in
McKinleyville. From the parking lot off Hiller Road, walk north on the

3 Mar.
-----------

In DEL NORTE COUNTY the 3rd cycle SLATY-BACKED GULL was in various areas in
the Smith River Bottoms (Alexandre Dairy, Lower Lake Road, Fred Haight
Drive) throughout the day. Amazingly, an adult SLATY-BACKED GULL (Alan
Barron, Onik Arian, Rob Fowler, Daryl Coldren) joined the same gull flock
that the 3rd cycle bird was in that was just south of the intersection of
Lower Lake and Moseley Road. The adult was observed for close to an hour and
then flew off with a flock of the other gulls and looked to head towards the
Smith River mouth. This second bird hasn't been refound. The LITTLE BLUE
HERON was still at the Alexandre Dairy (Alan Barron).

The AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was seen at it's usual location on the western
side of the V Street loop in the Arcata Bottoms. The CRESTED CARACARA was
seen, after much searching, on Meridian; it was on the dike of Reas creek.
There was also a PALM WARBLER in the willows here (Russ Namitz via
NWCALBIRD).

An adult BALD EAGLE was seen soaring over Ridgewood Heights, just outside of
Eureka (John Mellow).

On Bear River Ridge six HORNED LARKS, 1 dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and 1
immature FERRUGINOUS HAWK were the highlights. At Hiller Park in
McKinleyville a GREAT HORNED OWL, 1 COMMON GOLDENEYE and a continuing SWAMP
SPARROW were the highlights (Kerry Ross).

The HARRIS'S SPARROW that has been coming to a feeder at 1087 12 Street in
Arcata is still present. On the V Street Loop there was 1 ROSS'S GOOSE mixed
in with the Aleutian Cackling Geese and a SHORT-EARED OWL. In a small pond
along Jackson Ranch Road was a female COMMON GOLDENEYE (Scott Carey).

4 Mar.
-----------
A flock of about 105 ALEUTIAN CACKLING GEESE were seen coming off the ocean
from the North Jetty. Also present in the vicinity of the jetty were 1 BLACK
OYSTERCATHER, 2 ROCK SANDPIPERS, and 1 Gray Whale. At Woodley Island were a
male and female PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 OSPREY, and 11 WHIMBREL. At the Bayside
Cutoff, east of Highway 101, a HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK was seen, which
hasn't been reported for quite awhile. At the mouth of Redwood Creek, near
Orick, 7 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and 4 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS were the
highlights. At the southeast corner of the V Street Loop was a NORTHERN
SHRIKE and 11 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at the southwest corner
of the loop (Kerry Ross, Daryl Coldren).

The CRESTED CARACARA* continued near the southernmost barn on Meridian
avenue in the Ferndale Bottoms. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in the vicinity
of Woodley Island along with the continuing WHIMBREL (Alexandra Lamb).

A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen in the late afternoon near the mouth
of Butcher Slough, southeast of Klopp Lake at the Arcata Marsh (Paul
Springer).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY, despite much searching, none of the SLATY-BACKED GULLS
were refound all day. The LITTLE BLUE HERON continued north of the Alexandre
Dairy and a total of 9 different GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen in various areas
(Alan Barron et al.)

5 Mar.
-----------
The NORTHERN SHRIKE continued on the eastern end of the V Street Loop
mid-afternoon. The AMERICAN TREE SPARROW also continued but was seen in the
brambles at the last house on the western portion of Old Samoa Road,
differing from it's usual location (Rob Fowler).

A LONG-EARED OWL was seen around the headquarters at Humboldt Bay NWR (Steve
Lewis).

An OSPREY was seen building a nest in a cell phone tower at the Redwood Bowl
in the Cutten area of Eureka (Mike Metro).

A PALM WARBLER was seen on the west side of I Street, before the first
parking lot, at the Arcata Marsh. Two CEDWAR WAXWINGS were on the west side
of the Log Pond (Cindy Moyer).

6 Mar.
-----------
The CRESTED CARACARA* continued in the Ferndale Bottoms. The bird was first
seen nearest to Bush Street, accessed from Port Kenyon Road, and was later
seen perched in a tree west of Meridian, on the south side of Centerville
Road (Rob Fowler, Daryl Coldren, Scott Carey).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY, none of the SLATY-BACKED GULLS were refound but a total
of 10 GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen while searching (3-Alexandre Dairy, 4-Fred
Haight Drive, 2-Point Saint George, 1-Crescent City Harbor). At Point Saint
