In Colfax County:
DC on February 23 at Stubblefield Lake saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE near Lake 13 on
the Maxwell Refuge. Lake 14 was re-opened on March 1. On March 2
Stubblefield had 12 BALD EAGLES, still the female LONG-TAILED DUCK, a TUNDRA SWAN,
nine RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and four LAPLAND LONGSPURS. There has been four
LONG-EARED OWLS at the roost in the thicket near the 't' with Hwys. A5 and A1.

In Mora County:
WW on March 3 had a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW on Hwy. 97 at a cattle guard at
4.3 miles on the road to Cherry Valley Lake east of Watrous with TURKEYS.

In Bernalillo County:
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
ROSY-FINCHES. The SNC banding team reported that so far this winter they have
banded 636: 473 Blacks, 156 Gray-crowned, and only seven Brown-capped. (1060
banded since January 2004).

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio LS on February 17 reported at
the visitor center the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, TREE SWALLOWS flying over, and
the four WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. Also present was a flock of MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS.

In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park CBr on February 25 found three tan-striped
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, but missed the DIPPER that has wintered. He saw a few TREE
and ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS with two BALD EAGLES south of the park and a female
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.

In Grant County:
The February 24 field trip to Roberts Lake produced CANVASBACKS and
REDHEADS, with over 100 PINYON JAYS nearby.
EL had MEXICAN MALLARDS at the Tyrone Sewage Ponds on February 25.
CN had a few EASTERN BLUEBIRDS in a bluebird flock in the Gila Valley on
February 27.

In Hidalgo County:
JBi had a flock of AVOCETS on the playa west of Lordsburg near the Animas
exit of I-10 on February 22.
In Clanton Canyon GB reported two coveys of MONTEZUMA QUAIL on February 18.
In the grasslands around Cloverdale there was both longspurs with a GILA
WOODPECKER at Dunagan's Crossing. CCBr and CL on February 18 saw a PEREGRINE
FALCON at Dunagan's Crossing and two LONG-EARED OWLS in Clanton Canyon.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.

In Doņa Ana County:
JN has had an adult LEWIS'S WOODPECKER (photo) at his home near Mesilla on
February 23. It was still present for JN and KS on March 1, but JN did not
find it on March 3. Also found there was the male VERMILION FLYCATCHER with a
female YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER, EASTERN and MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS on March 3.
KS at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park near Mesilla on March 1 found
ROUGH-WINGED, CLIFF, and TREE SWALLOWS, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, up to six MARSH WRENS,
two SWAMP SPARROWS, a SORA, and three SAVANNAH SPARROWS.
JZ and MS on February 17 had a HARRIS'S SPARROW 4.5 miles north of Hatch on
B.B. Romig Rd. near an ostrich farm. CL found it on February 24, along with
two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
CL found 25 to 30 LONG-EARED OWLS roost at Randal's Pool on the west side of
the Rio near Sunland Park in a dense thicket. JZ found the roost on
February 16.
On the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs Park east of the Organ Mts. on
February 25 JZ and MS found a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, a singing OLIVE WARBLER, the
two ACORN WOODPECKERS, and a pair of HUTTON'S VIREOS.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs have had a female ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD appear through February 23.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes on February 22 CL and CBr had three LONG-EARED OWLS, a
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, with the DUNLIN still seen.
They found four HARRIS'S HAWKS a mile south of Tularosa.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.

In Eddy County:
RN had his first TURKEY VULTURE north of Loving on February 28 and March 1.
SW reminds that CAVE SWALLOWS have been back at the Carlsbad Caverns since
the first week of February.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On March 8 they go to Bosque del Apache with Sylvis Fee; on March 15 to
the Sandia Mts. Hawkwatch site with Pat Frnklin-Henden; on March 22 to Bear
(Oso) Canyon with Rebecca Gracey; and on March 29 at the Rio Grande Nature
Center with Allison Schacht.

The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays
on March 11, March 18, and March 25.

On March 10 Sangre de Cristo Audubon will bird at the Rio Grande Nature
Center. Contact is Jim Paulscl at 501-4085.

On March 17 Southwestern Audubon will bird San Vicente Creek south of
downtown Silver City. Contact is 534-1450.
