Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 8th,
2007. This report covers the period from March 1st to March 8th, and will
be updated again on March 15th.
The 2 PINK-FOOTED GEESE were relocated on the turf fields along Heaton
Orchard Road in Richmond on the 1st. Heaton Orchard Road runs north/south between
Route 2 and Route 138. There was also a SNOW GOOSE with the flock of CANADA
GEESE. On the 3rd, the PINK-FOOTED GEESE were found in South Kingston,
along Dug Way Bridge Road, which runs north from Route 138. This is the last
report of these birds. The BARNACLE GOOSE was found on the 3rd, and seen again
on the 4th, at St.Mary's Pond in Portsmouth, along with 4 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. A CACKLING GOOSE was present in the field adjacent to St.Mary's
Cemetery in Portsmouth along Route 138 on the 3rd. The BARNACLE GOOSE was not
reported after the 4th. On the 3rd, 1 CACKLING GOOSE and 1 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE were found at Lawton Valley Reservoir in Portsmouth.
The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continues at URI'S East Farm in Wakefield.
On the 5th, at South Shore Management Area in South Kingstown, a COMMON
RAVEN was reported.
At Mud Pond, at the end of Moonstone Beach Road, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN was
reported on the 3rd, and a SHORT-EARED OWL was reported a few times a dusk this
past week.
AMERICAN KESTRELS were found along Car's Pond Road and along Matunuck Beach
Road. On the beach at Matunuck, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was sighted on
the 3rd.
On the 1st, at Watchemoket Cove in East Providence, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL and 3 BLACK-HEADED GULLS were seen.
In Providence, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were reported near Brown University.
In Cumberland, at Diamond Hill Reservoir an adult BALD EAGLE was present
this past week, and the flock of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS continue at the Cumberland
Monastery.
On the 3rd, at Lonsdale Marsh in Lincoln, 1 MARSH WREN and 10 WOOD DUCKS
were spotted.
Early arrivals include 8 TREE SWALLOWS at the Wyoming Dam in Richmond on the
5th, and an OSPREY at the great Swamp on the 4th. AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were
reported from several areas. Finally, an AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER.was on the
south side of Rose Island.
The total number of species reported in the first two months of 2007 is 155.
