This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for
Thursday March 8, 2007 with reports of BLACK BRANT, BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE, MEW GULL, SANDHILL CRANE, seasonal and local reports of
interest, and announcements.
.
An adult MEW GULL was found among several hundred RING-BILLED GULLS
at Spruce Run Reservoir boat ramp on the afternoon of Mar 4. If
approved by the NJ Bird Records Committee, this would represent a
first state record.
.
The BLACK BRANT was noted again at South Amboy Waterfront Park Mar 3.
Look for the bird among the 'pale-bellied' BRANT flock that frequents
the athletic fields and shoreline. At nearby Matawan Creek in Keyport
a RED-NECKED GREBE was found the same day. For more information about
these sites see www.njaudubon.org/Centers/SHBO and click on "where to
bird along Raritan Bay."
.
The male and female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were seen as recently as Mar 3
in Horseshoe Cove; to look for the birds park at the small median lot
north of the ranger station—walk north and turn left at the gated
service road; follow to the bay and look here. Also at the hook this
week were RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and two MERLINS seen daily roosting
near the holly forest. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is
available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.
.
North Shore reports this week included 18 REDHEADS on Lake
Takanassee, a LITTLE GULL off Phillips Ave in Deal, and 1-2 RED-
NECKED GREBES in Shark River Marina: all Mar 4. The male HARLEQUIN
DUCK was off Corlies Ave in Allenhurst Mar 3 and the male EURASIAN
WIGEON was present on Silver Lake in Belmar the same day.
.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was re-found at Big Brook Park in Marlboro Mar 3-4.
From the intersection of Rte 79 & 520 head east on Rte 520 about a
half mile and turn right into the park, which is signed "Camp
Arrowhead." (Big Brook Park is undeveloped and has no signage). Park
near the fork in the road but do not block the gate. Follow the right
fork (a paved path) on foot for about a half mile to a T intersection
and a collapsed barn foundation. The bird tends to hunt the 2-3
fields east of the T (DeLorme P. 44, F-4).
.
A RED-NECKED GREBE continued on Lake Assunpink through Mar 4. Also
noted there Mar 2 were GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE,
and REDHEAD.
.
Barnegat Light State Park this week hosted 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, RED-
NECKED GREBE, and 160 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.
.
In Burlington County 115 TUNDRA SWANS were tallied at Franklin Parker
Preserve Mar 4. A GOLDEN EAGLE and 2 AMERICAN PIPITS highlighted
birds at Whitesbog Mar 6. Along the Delaware River between Florence
and Roebling Mar 1 were WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, RED-THROATED LOON, and 5
RED-NECKED GREBES.
.
In Salem County 2 SANDHILL CRANES were found over the Rte 45 bridge
at Mannington Marsh Mar 4. At Freas Rd in Pennsville an early
PECTORAL SANDPIPER was noted the same day.
.
Birds found at Round Valley Reservoir this week included LONG-TAILED
DUCK, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, and RED-NECKED GREBE Mar 4. Also in
Hunterdon County Mar 4 was a CACKLING GOOSE at Assiscong Marsh and 8
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at the Hamden Pumping Station.
.
Birds detected at Merrill Creek Reservoir included 7 REDHEADS, a
light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and second-year ICELAND GULL Mar 3-4.
At nearby Oberly Rd in Alpha a LAPLAND LONGSPUR was among 15 HORNED
LARKS there Mar 4-5.
.
A light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a SHORT-EARED OWL were detected
at the intersection of Rtes 206 and 94 in Newton Mar 1.
.
Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue at Rahway River Park through Mar
3. The birds are often viewed at the west end of the park near the
restrooms.
.
A COMMON RAVEN was noted in Montclair over Rte 23 & Bloomfield Ave
Mar 5-6.
.
