HIGHLIGHTS

Harlequin Duck, Rough-legged Hawk, Black-headed Gull

At Napeague there was a light phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the Walking
Dunes and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the Harbor on Mar 4 (AW).

Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were at the end of Springs Fireplace Rd in Spring on
Mar 4 (AW).

On Hook Pond there were 42 COMMON MERGANSERS on Mar 5 (AW). Four WOOD
DUCKS were at the David's Lane duck-feeding area in East Hampton on Mar
4-5 (AW)

At Sagaponack Pond, which is now open and has numerous flats, there was
an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on Mar 8-9, and an adult BLACK-HEADED
GULL on Mar 9 spotted from Bridge Lane (HM). Other birds on the pond on
Mar 9 included 40 COMMON MERGANSERS and 9 WILSON'S SNIPES (HM).

At Long Pond in Sag Harbor, there were 17 WOOD DUCKS on Mar 7, but since
then the pond has completely frozen over (HM).

At Shinnecock, there were 38 COMMON EIDERS on the sand bars north of the
inlet on Mar 3 (AW).

Thirty-five WILD TURKEYS were at the intersection of Rt 25 and Wading
River Rd on Mar 4 (DH). A MERLIN was seen on the Grumman property at
Line Rd on Mar 4 (DH).

At Marratooka Lake in Mattituck there were 27 SNOW GEESE including 3
blue morphs on Mar 8 (PG). Since blue morphs have not been reported this
winter, it would seem logical to conclude that these birds are newly
arrived migrants. Two dark morph SNOW GEESE were also seen along Edwards
Ave on Mar 7 (DH).

WHO SURVIVED THE WINTER? THE HALF-HARDY REPORT

A PINE WARBLER was still being seen at a Northwest Wood feeder through
the first week of March (JTo). A BROWN THRASHER has been visiting a
Springs feeder and was seen through Mar 8 (RG).

This week I received reports from Vicki Bustamante, Paul Gillen, Roger
Grunewald, Dan Heglund, Hugh McGuinness, Pauline Rosen, Mike Scheibel
(MSch), John & Miles Todaro (J&MTo), and Angus Wilson.

Good Birding to All!
