A CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE is still being seen in the Jasper townsite
in Jasper NP. The bird was seen there most recently on Tuesday, Feb 27.
It was originally seen in the townsite in late November af 2006, and
was reported there into early January, and then reported by Jason Rogers
to still be in the townsite as of Feb 27. The bird was always seen
coming to ground feeders in the yard of a townhouse, which was in a row
of townhouses on Aspen Cr.
There have been no reports recently on the female NORTHERN CARDINAL that
spent the last three weeks in February coming to the yard of Carl
Linnard at 5505 - 50 St in Olds. The bird was seen by many observers
during that period. The bird could usually be seen fairly early by
watching from the back alley there.
The leading edge of Spring migration 2007 has officially hit southern
Alberta. Three RING-BILLED GULLS were over the Bow River in the
Burnsmead area of east Fish Creek PP on Wednesday, Mar 7. The birds
were seen by Bruce Barnetson and members of a CFNS field trip. On
Monday, Mar 5, on Fincastle Lake, east of Taber, Lloyd Bennett observed
500 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 8 TUNDRA SWANS, 20 AMERICAN WIGEON,
3 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 14 CANVASBACK and 4 LESSER SCAUP. In his yard near
Taber on Wednesday, Mar 7, Lloyd saw a KILLDEER.
Other recent sightings of interest include a bird that was probably a
HARRIS'S SPARROW seen by Tom Lavelle(?) et al on Mar 4 along the Little
Red Deer River west of Bowden. Roland Gunther reported a GREAT GRAY OWL
on RgeRd 54 in west Bragg Creek on Feb 28, and then on the
Wintergreen Rd on Mar 4, he reported a NORTHERN PYGMY OWL.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, March 12.
