A woodpecker that may have been a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was reported in
northeast Calgary on the afternoon of Sunday, Mar 4. Th bird was
watched for approx 5 minutes by Evelyn Orr of 428 Maidstone Dr NE as it
moved around on the trunk of a tree in her backyard. Evelyn was struck
by the prominent black-and-white barring on the back and the wings and
also by the bird's bright reddish cap and nape. This would be Alberta's
first record of the species. For details, call Evelyn at 273-0428.
A CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE is still being reported from the Jasper
townsite. Doug Faulder observed the bird twice on Friday, Mar 9 - just
after sunrise on the Cottonwood Slough Tr, then later at 25 Aspen St.
The bird was originally reported in the town in late November.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in downtown Calgary on Thursday, Mar 8. Jim
