SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Barry reported the continuing PAINTED REDSTART at Yucaipa Regional Park on
March 9. He also added that the VERMILION FLYCATCHER he had reported last
week was seen at Covington Park, near the skateboard park.
Peter Robertshaw reported the first RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD of the year for him
in Crestline at his feeder on March 10.
Madeline Bauer reported seeing LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES at Yucaipa Regional
Park on March 12. The birds were seen near tent campsite F, west of the
lower lake.
Dave Goodward reported 2 SWAINSON’S HAWKS at Glen Helen Park on the
morning of March 13. One was a dark phase adult.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Andrew Howe and Madeline Bauer both confirmed the continuing YELLOW-
BELLIED SAPSUCKER along Tequesquite in Eastern Riverside on March 10. The
bird seems to prefer the pepper trees across the street from where San
Andreas takes off up the hill. In a later post, Madeline sighted a
PEREGRINE FALCON in the conifers opposite the Mira Loma post office at
Jurupa and Martin, and noted she does see the MERLIN AT THE Goose Creek
Golf Course. She also reported CHIPPING SPARROWS on the ground around the
horseshoe pits west of the RV campground at Rancho Jurupa and some
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS still on the south side near the entrance.
Roger Higson sent in a report from Blythe on March 10. He noted singing
CRISSAL THRASHER, several LARK SPARROWS, BARN SWALLOWS passing through,
occasional SAGE THRASHER, 2 LUCY’S WARBLERS in his backyard, and 2 WESTERN
KINGBIRD. Later in the day, he reported a CASSIN’S KINGBIRD, 6 RED-
BREASTED MERGANSER, a YELLOW WARBLER, and GILA WOODPECKERS.
Another birder from Blythe reported the continuing VERMILION FLYCATCHERS
at Mayflower County Park and the continuing GREAT-HORNED OWL. He also saw
two RED-NAPED SAPSUCKERS at the park. On the road between Hwy 95 and River
Road, on 6th, he say an OSPREY, and a light morph FERRUGINOUS HAWK. A
PRAIRIE FALCON was on a power pole 1 mile north of the power plant along
Buck Road, and 2 ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS were in the large wash which
crosses Buck Rd. north of the powerplant. They were near a pair of BLACK-
TAILED GNATCATCHERS. All reports were from March 10.
Chet McGaugh saw a FRANKLIN’S GULL on the south shore of Mystic Lake on
the morning of March 11. He also saw 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, a SNOW
GOOSE, MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, and WHITE-TAILED KITES on the fences.
Dan Williams saw his first pair of WESTERN KINGBIRD near Murrieta on March
12. He also saw a pair of BANK SWALLOWS.
A mature BALD EAGLE was reported in Anza on March 11, roosting in a
cottonwood tree in a private yard.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
