This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species

Belated Report: On Monday, the 5th of March, a WESTERN SCREECH-OWL was heard
calling off of Cummings Road in Eureka (Tom Leskiw).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a dead HORNED PUFFIN was picked up near Battery Point in
Crescent City on March 6th (Sky Lloyd fide Allan Barron).

7 Mar.

In DEL NORTE COUNTY the LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen in it's usual
location--in the field just north of Alexandre Dairy (Alan Barron).

8 Mar.
-----------
A second-hand report of a possible LAUGHING GULL at the eastern island of
Klopp Lake at the Arcata Marsh was relayed to the birdbox (Stan Harris).

An ACORN WOODPECKER, rare on the coast, came to a feeder on Bell Hill, which
is east of Highway 101, opposite of King Salmon (Matt Wachs).

9 Mar.
-----------
The possible LAUGHING GULL was confirmed today. The bird was seen around
9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on the mudflats just to the west of the I Street
parking lot (Rob Fowler; Daryl Coldren). There was also a continuing
EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL just to the southeast of Klopp Lake (Rob Fowler).


The LAUGHING GULL was seen from 1:00-2:00 p.m., being first seen on the
eastern island of Klopp Lake and then seen on the mudflats southeast of
Klopp Lake (Stan Harris).

A report came from DEL NORTE COUNTY. Since March 3 no SLATY-BACKED GULLS
have been seen. A total of 11 GLAUCOUS GULLS (1-Crescent City Harbor,
3-Alexandre Dairy, 7-Alexandre Dairy on Fred Haight Drive on n. side of the
Smith River). Seven EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES were seen in the town of Smith
River (Alan Barron).

10 Mar.

The LAUGHING GULL continued at the Arcata Marsh and was seen by numerous
observers on the mudflats just to the southeast of Klopp Lake (Scott Carey,
Stan Harris, Alexandra Lamb, Gary Bloomfield).

A 1st spring (second-year) male ORCHARD ORIOLE was found in the northeastern
area of the Butcher Slough Log Pond at the Arcata Marsh late morning and
seen again early afternoon by many observers (Rob Fowler, Kerry Ross,
Alexandra Lamb, Elias Elias). Coming from the northeastern corner walk to
the small pine on the east side of the trail that is being supported by a 2
foot tall plastic pvc pipe. The bird has been seen in the willows, feeding
on willow catkins, opposite of the pine. There was also a SAY'S PHOEBE on
the fence just west of the railroad tracks on I Street; the bird was later
seen at Allen Marsh. In fields west of Gearheart Marsh there was a ROSS'S
GOOSE in with the Aleutian Cackling Geese (Rob Fowler).

Also at the Arcata Marsh, 1 BARN SWALLOW, 40 TREE SWALLOWS, and 3
VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were seen flying over the Hauser Marsh. Four PALM
WARBLERS were seen on the north side of Klopp Lake (Scott Carey).

11 Mar.

The ORCHARD ORIOLE continued near the northeastern corner of the Log Pond at
the Arcata Marsh. The bird was seen in the willows by the # 10 trail marker
(Scott Carey, Noah Burrell).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a SAGE SPARROW (subspecies nevadensis) was found behind
the Beachcomber restaurant. This was a first county record for DEL NORTE.
The Beachcomber restaurant is about a mile south of Crescent City along
Highway 101 (Eileen Cooper and Sky Lloyd fide Alan Barron).

On the North Jetty of Humboldt Bay, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. 3 HARLEQUIN DUCKS (2
male, 1 female), 3 ROCK SANDPIPERS, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 10 BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKES, and 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL were the highlights. On the eastern side
of the V Street Loop the NORTHERN SHIKE continued. One COOPER'S HAWK was
seen at the Log Pond at the Arcata Marsh and 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was seen
soaring over the observers house in Arcata. The HARRIS'S SPARROW was still
present at the observers house in Arcata (Scott Carey).

12 Mar.

In DEL NORTE COUNTY the SAGE SPARROW found yesterday could not be relocated
(Alan Barron).

At the Blue Lake Fish Hatchery 1 male each of RUFOUS and ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD
were seen along with 1 subadult BALD EAGLE, 5 WOOD DUCKS, and 1 CALIFORNIA
TOWHEE. At the mouth of the Mad River the observer had a 1st winter GLAUCOUS
GULL (Scott Carey).

13 Mar.

Since the 10th a NORTHERN SHRIKE has been present in TRINITY COUNTY(Frances
Oliver, Liz West). The bird was also seen on the 11th and today (John Luther
via Northwest Calbird). Directions posted on Northwest Calbird by John
Luther are as follows: The bird is in Hayfork. Take highway 3 south from 299
and go west through Hayfork. At the west end of town highway 3 turns left
(south) and crosses a creek. Just on the south side of the creek turn right
(west) onto Tule Creek Rd and in about a mile or less you will see a large
barn on your left (that is south of the road). Just past the barn and across
another small creek is the entrance to the sewage plant. The shrike was seen
across the creek from the sewage plant road in the fields and area between
this road and the large barn.

Also in TRINITY COUNTY a MEW GULL was found at Trinity Center on Trinity
Lake (John Luther via Northwest Calbird).
