In Colfax County:
DC on March 2 at Stubblefield Lake had 12 BALD EAGLES, still the female
LONG-TAILED DUCK, a TUNDRA SWAN, nine RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and four LAPLAND
LONGSPURS. There has been four LONG-EARED OWLS at the roost in the thicket
near the 't' with Hwys. A5 and A1.
In Mora County:
WW on March 3 had a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW on Hwy. 97 at a cattle guard 4.3
miles on the road to Cherry Valley Lake east of Watrous.
In Bernalillo County:
BH snowshoed north on Sandia Crest on March 4. At 3/4 of a mile beyond the
towers there was a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER, three CASSIN'S FINCHES, and 28
PINE SISKINS.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there has been a good number
of ROSY-FINCHES, but they may leave before long. The SNC banding team
reported that so far this winter they have banded 773: 579 Blacks, 186 Gray-crowned,
and only eight Brown-capped. (1197 banded since January 2004).
In Valencia County:
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen JP reported on March 10 ten
BLACK-NECKED STILTS.
In Torrance County:
UG on March 4 at the intersection of NM41 and 542 at dusk had an apparent
roost of up to six FERRUGINOUS HAWKS.
In Curry County:
HAM on March 4 reported an adult ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK south of Grady at county
roads Q and 34.
In Socorro County:
SM on March 10 saw two female COMMON GOLDENEYES at Terry Lake on the NMTU
campus in Socorro just behind the new Fine Arts Bldg. on Canyon Drive.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio DC on March 5 had a tan-striped
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the Quail Pond, a gray FOX SPARROW, only a flock
of up to 60 ROSS'S GEESE, and a pair of VERMILION FLYCATCHERS on the east side
of the Marsh Loop. UG on March 4 had a MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, and a CRISSAL
THRASHER. GF on March 7 had a MERLIN over the Flight Deck and the
White-throated Sparrow.
In Sierra County:
At the Rock Canyon Marina tires on Elephant Butte Lake DC very early at dawn
from March 6 to 8 had the first winter ICELAND GULL with HERRINGS. They
then flew off (to the dump?). GF also reported the ICELAND Gill with six
Herrings on March 7. JP, BP, and WW saw it at 7:00 when it again flew off. DC
said on March 9 it returned to the tires at the marina at 3:30. JP and crew had
an adult MEW GULL at the marina at 11:00.
At Percha Dam State Park on March 3 UG reported a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER,
an empidonax flycatcher (Hammond's?), and the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. KS on
March 5 saw over 40 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, and up to seven PHAINOPEPLAS. GF on
March 7 had five VERMILION Flycatchers, the Phainopeplas, one EASTERN
BLUEBIRD with the Westerns, two MYRTLE WARBLERS, a CLAY-COLORED and s gray FOX SPAR
ROW, and many LINCOLN'S SPARROWS. DC on March 9 saw the five WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE in the fields by the park. JP, BP, and WW on March 10 saw two
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS there.
JP, BP, and WW on March 10 saw another WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at Paseo del
Rio Park below Elephant Butte Dam and an EASTERN PHOEBE at the Oxbow Lake in
Truth or Consequences.
On Caballo Lake at Percha Flats KS on March 5 saw a CACKLING GOOSE and five
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, and a COMMON MERGANSER.
In Grant County:
The February 24 field trip to Roberts Lake produced over 100 PINYON JAYS
nearby.
In Hidalgo County:
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Doņa Ana County:
JN has had an adult LEWIS'S WOODPECKER at his home on Snow Road near Mesilla
since February 23. It was still present for JN on March 6. Also found
there was EASTERN, WESTERN, and MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS on March 3. At March 6 JN had
an EASTERN PHOEBE.
CBr on March 10 again saw the two HOODED MERGANSERS along the ditch on the
south side of Mesilla Hills Drive between Calle del Norte and Bilbo Lane.
JZ and MS on March 10 and 11 checked out the Corralitos playa west of Las
Cruces and found two female LESSER SCAUPS.
MS saw a CAVE SWALLOW over their home near Radium Springs.
In Fillmore Canyon in the western Organ Mts. CBr found two VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOWS, a female OLIVE WARBLER, AND five RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES.
JZ on March 7 found 12 COMMON GRACKLES on NM 295 a mile north of the
Mayfield High School.
KS at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park near Mesilla on March 1 found
ROUGH-WINGED, CLIFF, and TREE SWALLOWS, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, up to six MARSH WRENS,
two SWAMP SPARROWS, a SORA, and three SAVANNAH SPARROWS. JN on March 6 saw
an EASTERN PHOEBE, 18 CINNAMON TEALS, the Sora, Yellowthroats, Marsh Wrens,
and Swamp Sparrows.
KS had a lone TURKEY VULTURE over Mesilla Park on March 5. He saw an adult
BALD EAGLE between Salem and Garfield.
LS and BR on March 11 at La Mesa saw a FERRUGINOUS HAWK and a TURKEY VULTURE.
On March 7 KS saw three BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHERS in an arroyo east of the
NMSU campus.
TM had a tree full of CEDAR WAXWINGS on South Telshor in Las Cruces on March
7 eating red berries.
JZ and MS on February 17 had a HARRIS'S SPARROW 4.5 miles north of Hatch on
B.B. Romig Rd. near an ostrich farm. CL found it on February 24, along with
two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
On the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs Park east of the Organ Mts. on
February 25 JZ and MS found a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, a singing OLIVE WARBLER, the
two ACORN WOODPECKERS, and a pair of HUTTON'S VIREOS.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes on February 22 CL and CBr had three LONG-EARED OWLS
with the DUNLIN still seen.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
SW photogaphed a first year WESTERN GULL at Brantley Lake on March 4.
RN had his first TURKEY VULTURE north of Loving on February 28. SW saw 28
over the north part of Carlsbad on March 4.
He found CLIFF and CAVE Swallows at an apparent new nesting site on US 295
1.1 miles north of the road to Sitting Bull Falls under a culvert.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On March 15 they go to the Sandia Mts. Hawkwatch site with Pat
Frnklin-Henden; on March 22 to Bear (Oso) Canyon with Rebecca Gracey; and on March 29
at the Rio Grande Nature Center with Allison Schacht.
The next banding dates for the Sandia Crest rosy finches will be on Sundays,
March 18, and perhaps March 25.
On Saturday, March 17 Southwestern Audubon will bird San Vicente Creek south
of downtown Silver City. Contact is 534-1450.
On Saturday, March 24 Mesilla Valley Audubon will explore the Holloman
