WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday March 19, 2007
FOX SPARROWS are being reported everywhere, sometimes in groups of up to 10 or
15. EASTERN PHOEBES and KILLDEERS have also arrived.
On Pondside Road and West Road in Longmeadow there have been up to 120 WOOD
DUCKS, 150 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 45 NORTHERN PINTAIL, and 16 AMERICAN WIGEON.
In the duck ponds at Forest Park in Springfield there were 5 AMERICAN WIGEON,
a GADWALL, 40 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a CANVASBACK, and 12 HOODED MERGANSERS.
Along Route 47 in North Hadley were 67 WOOD DUCKS, 3 AMERICAN WIGEON, 8
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 17 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 52 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a LESSER SCAUP,
and a PIED-BILLED GREBE. A MERLIN and an AMERICAN WOODCOCK were seen elsewhere
in Hadley..
Reported on the Sunderland end of Rote 47 were 7 SNOW GEESE, 6 AMERICAN
WIGEON, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 40 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2
NORTHERN HARRIERS, and 5 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
There were 17 WOOD DUCKS, 4 AMERICAN WIGEON, and 53 RING-NECKED DUCKS at
Turners Falls, and 4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 34 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a BUFFLEHEAD, a
COMMON LOON, and a GREAT BLUE HERON at Quabbin Park.
An OSPREY was present at Ashley Ponds in Holyoke today along with several
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. Two AMERICAN WOODCOCK and 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were in
Southwick, and an EASTERN TOWHEE and a BELTED KINGFISHER were seen in
Belchertown.
Reported at the airport in Northampton were 100 HORNED LARKS, 20 SNOW
BUNTINGS, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR. A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen elsewhere in
Northampton.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE and 10 SNOW GEESE were seen in Egremont, another NORTHERN
SHRIKE and 2 GREAT BLUE HERONS were noted in Lenox, 2 BLACK VULTURES, 7 WOOD
DUCKS and a BELTED KINGFISHER were in Pittsfield, and 2 BLACK VULTURES were
reported in Great Barrington.
PURPLE FINCHES came to feeders in Sheffield and Blandford, and a SWAMP SPARROW
was reported in Hatfield.
