Welcome to the City of Calgary and the Nature Calgary Bird Alert. This Bird
Alert was recorded on Monday, March 19 at 10:35am. To report injured

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in
Calgary on Sunday, March 18. The bird was a 2nd year bird; it was observed
by Bob Storms, Dave Smith and Reid Barclay on the Bow River between 4:30 and
6pm.
Two WESTERN MEADOWLARKS were reported south of Calgary over the weekend.
Greg Wagner et al reported a bird at High River on Saturday, March 17; then
on Sunday, Mar 18, Terry Korolyk saw a bird off Twp Rd 140 east of Pine
Coulee Reservoir west of Stavely. Lois and Bill Lang reported a RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD was at Frank Lake 6 kms east of High River on Hwy 23 on the
morning of Sat, Mar 17. AMERICAN ROBINS were fairly widespread in our area
over the weekend with reports from many locations in and around the cities
and towns in our area. Terry Korolyk observed a movement of 80+ birds that
moved from Fish Creek PP into the Parkland subdivision of Calgary on the
morning of Fri, Mar 16. On Sun Mar 18, Terry observed 30 Robins around a
residential intersection in north Nanton.
There were 2 FERRUGINOUS HAWK reports over the weekend. Bernard and Therese
Goulet and Jim Black observed a bird at the Hwy 564-Rge Rd 253 junction
north of Strathmore on Friday, Mar 16; then on Sunday, Mar 18 Terry Korolyk
reported a resident bird was at the nest at the SW corner of Clear Lake
north of Twp Rd 140 15 kms east of Stavely. The same day Terry observed an
adult light morph RED-TAILED HAWK at the Hwy 2-Hwy 23 junction at High
River. A male EURASIAN WIGEON was seen by the Goulets and Jim Black at
Frank Lake on Mar 16. They also saw 2 male NORTHERN SHOVELERS while
AMERICAN COOTS were reported there March 17 by Lois and Bill Lang, and Greg
Wagner et al. Terry Korolyk reported on Mar 18, at least 35 BALD EAGLES
were feasting on Ground Squirrels at Pine Lake Reservoir south of the Hwy
527 Bridge while another 23 were roosting in trees along nearby Willow
Creek. Terry saw 2 SNOWY OWLS Mar 18 along the Hwy 799 north of Blackie,
while Greg Wagner observed a brownish GYRFALCON approximately a mile north
of Frank Lake on Thurs, Mar 15.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, March 22.
BIRD STUDY GROUP: Meets the first Wednesday of every month except June
through August when field trips replace the meetings. Meetings are held in
Room 211 of the Biosciences Bldg at U of C and start at 7:30pm. The April
meeting will feature a Gull Identification Workshop by Mike Mulligan.

Wed Mar 28, 8:30am: Birding Bow River. Meet at Mallard Pt, FCPP, E end of

Sat Mar 31, 8:30am: Birding Frank Lake for swans, ducks, early migrants.
Meet Anderson LRT (Macleod Tr), S of pedestrian overpass, for carpooling.

Sat Mar 31, 8:30am: Birding Griffith Woods Park, 2.5km W on Hwy 8 from
Sarcee Tr, then left at 69 St SW into Discovery Ridge. Continue straight at
traffic circle, then left on Discovery Link into parking lot. Leader, Mike

Sat Mar 31, 10am: Signs of spring: early wildflowers; migrating birds on
Nose Hill. Meet parking lot off 14 St at 64 Av NW. Leader, John McFaul,

Sun Apr 1, 8:30am: (NOTE TIME is CHANGED). Monthly Elbow River Birding
Survey. Meet Stanley Park, 42 Av SW, just W of Macleod Tr. Walk to Glenmore
