This is the Saturday, August 6, 2005 Missouri Bird Alert, a statewide
service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the birding
community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from
reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout the
state. The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual, or
accidental on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds. Species
that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section are listed
as “casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be considered
rare only during a particular season or in a particular part of the
state.)
On Saturday, August 8 at about 10:30-11:30 a.m., Bob Fisher, Jim
Zellmer, and Ellen Zellmer found what they believe was an immature
CAVE SWALLOW among Rough-winged Swallows on a north/south gravel road
between Montrose Lake and the town of Montrose (Henry Co.). To get to
this gravel road, go south on Hwy RA from the Montrose CA
headquarters. This road bridges across the west end of Montrose Lake.
Take the first right (west) after the bridge into a strip-mine area,
then take the second left (south). This gravel road is about 2.5
miles long; the bird was seen about half way down the road on the
left-hand side. (DeLorme Atlas Page 43, B6). If accepted by the MBRC,
this would represent a first state record for CAVE SWALLOW.
In the northwestern part of the state: At about 6:30 p.m. on
Saturday, August 6, Doug Willis discovered one TRICOLORED HERON at
Bean Lake (Platte Co.).
The best way to get there: From the Kansas City area, take Mo Hwy 45
north to the town of Iatan. Just north of Iatan, turn left (west)
onto Swamp Road. If you continue on this road, you will eventually
see a brown sign at an intersection where Swamp Road turns into River
Road. This will take you to the south end of the oxbow lake.
