Welcome to the City of Calgary and the Nature Calgary Bird Alert. This Bird
Alert was recorded on Thursday, Mar 22 at 10:15am. To speak to a naturalist

The female NORTHERN CARDINAL has reappeared at the home of Carl Linnard at
5505 - 50 Street in Olds, Alberta. The bird first appeared in Carl's yard
on February 7 or 8 and subsequently showed up almost daily throughout the
month. The bird disappeared in early March, but on Tues. Mar 20, Carl
reported that he was seeing her around his home again. For more information

The first GLAUCOUS GULLS of the spring season have been reported. Two birds
were seen on the Bow River at the north end of the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
on Tues Mar 20. One bird was an adult and one was a 2nd year bird. Both
birds were seen late in the day by Reid Barclay. One of the birds was there
earlier in the dayand the 2nd year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL that was there
on Sunday was watched by Reid, Bob Storms and Bill Wilson between 4:30pm and
6:45pm on Tuesday, Mar 20.



There was one male EURASIAN WIGEON report this week. Greg Wagner saw the
bird at Frank Lake 6 kms. east of High River on Hwy 23 on Mon Mar 19. Greg
reported thousands of NORTHERN PINTAILS were at the south end of the lake.
He saw a FERRUGINOUS HAWK north of the lake and south of the lake on 562
Ave, he observed a grey-morph GYRFALCON. Terry Korolyk reported a
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was along Lake Placid Dr of Lake Bonavista in south
Calgary on Mar 21, while in a field off Hwy 22X 2 kms east of 88 St was a
GOLDEN EAGLE reported by Rick Runn on Mar 19. Lloyd Bennett reported a
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD from Taber on Mar 20 and Andrew Slater observed 4 AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS in the Weaselhead in Calgary on Mar 21. Lloyd Bennett noted
TRUMPETER SWANS and GADWALL at Fincastle Lake east of Taber on Tues Mar 20.



The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, March 26.



BIRD STUDY GROUP: Meets the first Wednesday of every month except June
through August when field trips replace the meetings. Meetings are held in
Room 211 of the Biosciences Bldg at U of C and start at 7:30pm. The March
meeting will feature Mike Mulligan with a Gull Identification Clinic. For

Sarcee Tr, then left at 69 St SW into Discovery Ridge. Continue straight at

Sat Mar 31, 10am: Signs of spring: early wildflowers; migrating birds on
Nose Hill. Meet parking lot off 14 St at 64 Av NW. Leader, John McFaul,

Survey. Meet Stanley Park, 42 Av SW, just W of Macleod Tr. Walk to Glenmore
