This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

BELATED REPORTS: On 9 March 5 TUFTED PUFFINS, 1 HORNED PUFFIN, and 12
RHINOCEROS AUKLETS carcasses were picked up along Mad River Beach (Mike
Kelley fide John Hunter).

On 12 March 1 TUFTED PUFFIN carcass was picked up from Samoa Beach (Chris
Bolz fide John Hunter).

14 Mar.

In Eureka an adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen off of Pine Street; the
bird was seen long enough to confirm that it wasn't a hybrid (Barrry
Sauppe).

15 Mar.

While walking in Bayside towards dusk an observer noted 120 TUNDRA SWANS
flying north (David Fix).

The following birds resulted from a 4 1/2 hour seawatch in the afternoon at
Patricks Point State Park (highlights listed first): ROCK SANDPIPER, 1 male
BLACK SCOTER, 378 SURF SCOTERS, 73 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES (40 adults, 33
immatures), 1150 COMMON MURRES flying north, 3 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, a pair of
MARBLED MURRELETS in winter plumage, and 15 RED-THROATED LOONS--the only
loons seen (Barry Sauppe).

In Arcata the HARRIS'S SPARROW continues at 1087 12th Street. The bird
seemed to be gone but had been present for the last 3 days (Scott Carey).
Call the birdbox for more info.

17 Mar.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW has been visiting a feeder in Arcata for a couple
of weeks (Brad Freeman).

The CRESTED CARACARA continued in the Ferndale Bottoms, being seen on a
fencepost off of Meridian. The NORTHERN SHRIKE also continued on the eastern
end of the V Street Loop (Daryl Coldren).

Forty-four CASPIAN TERNS were at the mouth of the Elk River in Eureka,
accessed by Hilfiker Lane (Scott Carey).

18 Mar.

The ORCHARD ORIOLE continued at the Butcher Slough Log Pond at the Arcata
Marsh; the bird was seen near trail marker 10 (Daryl Coldren, Frances
Oliver).

The only gull highlights at the mouth of Redwood Creek, near Orick, were 5
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES; many gulls were present, though . Also, the
HARRIS'S SPARROW was still present at 1087 12th Street in Arcata (Scott
Carey).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY, 12 HARLEQUIN DUCKS (9 males, 3 females) were seen off
of the mouth of Wilson Creek, just opposite of the Redwood Hostel, north of
Klamath (Rich Ridenhour, Gayle Coonen).

19 Mar.

Two GLAUCOUS GULLS were near the mouth of the Mad River. One HORNED and 1
TUFTED PUFFIN were picked up along the Mad River Beach. On the South Spit
there was 1 HORNED PUFFIN carcass picked up along the beach and 3
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were in the gull flock (Daryl Coldren).
