This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, March 23,

The recent snows have melted away under the influence of the March sun,
and birdsong is heard everywhere. Resident species such as chickadees,
and nuthatches are tuning up, and every day a new song can be heard as
the earliest migrants appear. There are reports of several members of
the blackbird family, and of geese throughout the area. Horned Larks are
common now in the region, and several species of raptor are being
reported.
Ben Fritchman reported on March 16 that SANDHILL CRANES have returned to
Long Prairie in Todd County.
On March 15, Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County reported
NORTHERN HARRIER and MERLIN, on the 17th there were RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS. COMMON GRACKLE appeared on March 18, and on the 20th they
saw a RED-TAILED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, and SANDHILL CRANE. Other
species seen this week in Otter Tail County included TRUMPETER SWAN,
CANADA GOOSE, GADWALL, HOODED MERGANSER, and a pair of NORTHERN
CARDINALS.
Ben Fritchman found a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in Clay County on March 20
displaying with a group of GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS at a lek near
Bluestem Prairie. To get there from MN 10 , go south on MN 9 to 17th St.
and one miles east. The lek is in the southwest corner of that
intersection. Also in Clay County, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported a
BALD EAGLE north of Ulen, four pairs of TRUMPETER SWANS north and west
of Hitterdahl, and 1000 CANADA GEESE north of Moorhead.
Mary Richards reports that a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS are working on
a tree at Maplelag Resort in Becker County.
Mary Broten , on March 21, found a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS near US 59
south of Ogema in Mahnomen County.
On March 15, Shelley Steva observed a NORTHERN HARRIER in Red Lake
County two miles north of Plummer. A BALD EAGLE was seen by Anita
Vettleson between Plummer and Brooks in recent days.
In Pennington County, Shelley saw a group of AMERICAN CROWS numbering
over 100 on March 19. Here at our home near Thief River Falls on March
20, a HOUSE FINCH could be heard singing when I arrived home. On March
21, a mixed flock of waxwings came to consume the last of the
crabapples. A flock of 25 CANADA GEESE was flying over the town of Thief
River Falls on the afternoon of March 21.
In Marshall County, Linda Johnson reported HORNED LARKS, BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS, and CEDAR WAXWINGS on March 15. Gary Tischer reported 2
AMERICAN KESTRELS along CR 7 west of Agassiz NWR , and a RED-TAILED HAWK
along CR 12 on March 21. On March 22, there were 10 BALD EAGLES and
about 50 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in and around the refuge, and a MOURNING
DOVE showed up at headquarters.
Pat Rice saw a RED-TAILED HAWK in Cass County on March 18.
In Beltrami County, on March 18, Pat Rice observed 12 TRUMPETER SWANS,
and CANADA GEESE on the Mississippi River along CR 8. She also reported
an OSPREY seen by Earl and Bonnie Ockenga in Bemidji on March 20. 18
COMMON GOLDENEYE were at the Mississippi River inlet in Bemidji on March
18. COMMON REDPOLLS are still coming to Pat's feeder northeast of
Bemidji. Kelly Larson saw an AMERICAN KESTREL in Bemidji on March 22.
Lyle and Sally Lauber at Dixon Lake in western Itasca County reported
that a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS visited briefly on March 11, and on March
16, there were PURPLE FINCH, COMMON REDPOLLS, PINE SISKINS, and AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES at their place.
Larry Wilebski in Kittson County continues to have GRAY JAYS, as many as
11 on March 17. Other species arriving include CANADA GOOSE, NORTHERN
HARRIER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and HOUSE FINCH. GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen on
March 16, and there are still a pair of HOARY REDPOLLS at his place.
Beth Siverhus reported that AMERICAN CROWS had arrived in force in
Roseau County by March 20.
