This is the Thursday, March 22, 2007 Missouri Rare
Bird Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society
of Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the
state.) The Missouri checklist can be accessed at:

COLUMBIA/CENTRAL
On Thursday, March 8, Craig Litteken observed 2
SMITH’S LONGSPURS in the small three-awn grass patch
at Bradford Farm (Boone Co.). A follow up trip on
Saturday, March 10, allowed many to obtain great views
of 15 SMITH’S LONGSPURS. However, on Saturday the
birds were located in a different location at
Bradford. To observe these birds walk the plowed
field directly north (behind) the line of trucks with
the attached trailers. This area is located on the
right immediately after you pass the metal buildings
when coming from the Bradford Farm entrance. As many
as 6 SMITH’S LONGSPURS were still present at this same
location when observed by Joe Eades and Joshua Uffman
on Saturday, March 17. Additionally, Joe and Josh
observed the HARRIS’S SPARROW in “the brushpile” on
Saturday that was first reported by Jean Leonatti on
January 6.
On Saturday, March 10, Dave Rogles and Tom Borman
observed a GOLDEN EAGLE. The bird was first observed
perched in a tree near the gate at the far end of
pools 11/12. Then the bird flew west over the river.
The bird was last reported seen by Clint Trammel and
Jean Leonatti on Friday, March 16. Birders should pay
close attention to the Turkey Vultures flying in the
area as this bird has been reported to be mixed in
with them at times.
Another GOLDEN EAGLE (sub-adult) was observed in
flight by Edge Wade from the DeBourgmont Access in
western Cooper Co. on Friday, March 16.
NORTHEAST
On Saturday, March 18, Phil Wire reported that 3
GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were present at the lek in
western Adair Co.
Patrick Harrison observed 11 GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES
perched on a fence on the south side of Hwy 24, about
a mile east of Taylor (Marion Co.) on Sunday, March
18.
NORTHWEST
Steve Kinder reported a count of 21 GREATER
PRAIRIE-CHICKENS observed at the Nature Conservancy’s
Dunn Ranch (Harrison Co.) during the last week.
Birders interested in viewing these birds should
contact Doug at 314.968.1105 or call the St. Joseph
MDC office at 816.271.3107.
SOUTHEAST
At the home of Wes and Claudia Mueller, Cape
Girardeau, an immature RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues
visiting their feeder since late October 2006. Wes
was able to keep the feeders thawed through the
winter. If interested in obtaining directions to view
this bird please call the Mueller's first at
573-334-4555.
KANSAS CITY AREA
On Friday, March 2, Dick Dawson observed a single RED
CROSSBILL feeding at his sunflower feeder in midtown
Kansas City. He last observed this bird on the
morning of Thursday, March 15.
ST. LOUIS AREA
On Friday, March 16, Steven Ewer observed a MERLIN
perched along Lagoon Road, just east of the Grand
Basin at Forest Park (St. Louis City).
Eric Schuette observed 2 GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES at the
Bittern Basin Unit of BK Leach CA (Lincoln Co.) on
Sunday, March 18.
A PEREGRINE FALCON chasing waterfowl was observed on
Sunday, March 18, at Columbia Bottoms CA by James
Hickner.
On Tuesday, March 20, Dave Rogles observed a MERLIN in
the area of Keeteman and Glacial Sand Roads (Lincoln
