Of Special Note
FOX SPARROWS thronged feeders in the south, west, and mid-coast areas,
while RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES are now reported
state-wide. Reports of PURPLE FINCHES and DARK-EYED JUNCOS also
increased state-wide.
First of the year reports received this week were GREAT EGRET, BROWN
THRASHER, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and SAVANNAH and
CHIPPING SPARROWS.
Other notables included a SNOWY OWL which continues in Corinna, a
SHORT-EARED OWL in Fairfield, and 8 LAPLAND LONGSPURS in Scarborough
Marsh.
York County
An EASTERN PHOEBE was sitting on the snow fence at Ogunquit Beach on
March 19 while another was in Kennebunk on March 20.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK returned to the woods off Haley Road in Hollis
where a pair has nested for the past several years.
A leucistic NORTHERN CARDINAL was reported at a feeder on River Road in
Eliot.
Greater Portland
Birds at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center included : 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, 8 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, and a pair of NORTHERN
PINTAILS. Across the road from the Audubon Center there were a Gadwall
and a GREAT EGRET. Four KILLDEER, 2 FOX SPARROWS, and a SAVANNAH
SPARROW were at Dunstan Landing.
There were 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at Pelreco. CANADA GOOSE numbers
increased throughout the week.
A CAROLINA WREN, a COMMON RAVEN, and a FOX SPARROW were at Pine Point.
Elsewhere in Scarborough, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was at Fuller Farm on
Broadturn Road on March 21.
Two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and a male NORTHERN HARRIER were hunting the
Spurwink Marsh in Cape Elizabeth on March 16.
An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was walking in the snow along a creek on Bellaire
Road in South Portland on March 16.
A KILLDEER was at Zebb's Cove in Cape Elizabeth on March 18. Five BRANT
were at Kettle Cove. Twelve HARLEQUIN DUCKS continue at Two Lights where
a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen on March 21.
In Portland, a MERLIN, a RED-TAILED HAWK, a COOPER'S HAWK, and an
AMERICAN WOODCOCK were seen in Evergreen Cemetery where the AMERICAN
WIGEON also continues.
An early BROWN THRASHER is coming to suet at a home on Peaks Island.
COOPER'S HAWKS are building a nest in Gorham.
A male NORTHERN PINTAIL and a male & female AMERICAN WIGEON joined the
MALLARDS and AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS on Collins Pond in Windham while a
pair of COOPER'S HAWKS passed through another yard in the area on March
18.
AMERICAN WOODCOCK were seen in Cumberland.
In Freeport, the Bradbury Mountain Hawk Watch tallied 97 raptors of 10
species from March 20 through March 22 with 45 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 14
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 13 TURKEY VULTURES, 10 BALD EAGLES, 4 COOPER'S
HAWKS, 3 MERLIN, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 AMERICAN
KESTREL, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, and 3 unidentified raptors.
Midcoast
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK frequented a Georgetown yard.
A male WOOD DUCK joined a large flock of MALLARDS on the Androscoggin
River in Topsham, while elsewhere an AMERICAN WOODCOCK was seen.
RING-NECKED DUCKS were found on the Megunticook River in Camden.
Lewiston-Auburn
A CHIPPING SPARROW joined SONG SPARROWS, PURPLE FINCHES, and DARK-EYED
JUNCOS in an Auburn yard.
Kennebec Valley
There was a RUSTY BLACKBIRD at Eight Rod Road in Augusta on March 17,
followed by 10 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on March 20, and a YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER March 21.
Two RING-NECKED DUCKS were at Forth Halifax in Winslow.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen off Route 23 in Fairfield on March 13.
An EASTERN MEADOWLARK arrived in a field in Sidney on March 15.
Central Maine
On open water on the Penobscot between the Veterans' and the Chamberlain
bridges in Bangor, there were 100+ COMMON MERGANSERS, 3 pairs of
BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS, a few AMERICAN BLACK
DUCKS, and MALLARDS.
In downtown Bangor, a very leucistic adult RED-TAILED HAWK was being
dive-bombed by 6 crows as it circled over Prentiss/Jefferson Streets on
March 22.
Flood Farms in Clinton had 65-70 SNOW BUNTINGS along with 12 to 15
HORNED LARKS on March 22.
The SNOWY OWL at Veazieland Farm on White Road in Corinna was roosting
among a pile of boulders just a few yards southwest of the barns on
March 21.
Penobscot Bay
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on the Gilbert Farm Road in Bar Harbor on
March 19.
A single male EVENING GROSBEAK visited a feeder in Bar Harbor on March
19.

Western Maine
A SNOW GOOSE was with 41 CANADA GEESE In the field across from Weston's
beach on Rt. 113 in Fryeburg on March 15.
Aroostook County
Joining DARK-EYED JUNCOS in Fort Kent were 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and
4 EVENING GROSBEAKS.
Houlton and New Sweden saw the arrival of COMMON GRACKLES and RED-WINGED
BLACKBI RDS.
