Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 24th,
2007. This report covers the period from March 16th to March 23rd, and
will be updated again on March 29th.
An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE was found at Durfee Hill Wildlife Management Area
in Glocester, along the eastern edge of Burlingame Reservoir on the 18th.
Also that day a total of 19 FOX SPARROWS were observed around the Glocester area.
A COMMON RAVEN was spotted in South Kingstown on the 19th.
Found in North Kingston, over Route 102 near Route 1, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
was seen on the 19th.
At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was found, and
seen again the next day. This is the earliest date on record for this species
in Rhode Island. Also present at Succotash this week was a GREAT EGRET and 1
GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
The small flock of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS continue to be reported at the
Cumberland Monastery. They were seen with other blackbird species feeding on the
ground, near the maintenance building.
At Ninigret NWR, 1 EASTERN MEADOWLARK, 15 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 3 HORNED LARKS, 2
TREE SWALLOS and 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were found this week.
On the 23rd, at Card's Pond in Matunuck, 1 SNOW GOOSE was observed with a
flock of CANADA GEESE. An ICELAND GULL was found along the beach, at the
breach to the pond on the 17th.
Along Card's Pond Road on the 19th, 2 EASTERN MEADOWLARK were reported, and
an AMERICAN KESTRAL was spotted on the 17th.
In Cross Mills Pond, 16 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were observed on the 17th.
An AMERICAN PIPIT was found near Shelter Cove Marina in South Kingstown.
At Sachuest Point In Middletown on the 21st, 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and 15
HARLEQUIN DUCKS.
A LAUGHING GULL was reported near the Weekapaug Breachway in Westerly on the
19th.
Three PIPING PLOVERS returned to Third Beach in Middletown this week.
On the 18th, At Black Point in Narraganset, 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS, 1
BONAPARTE'S GULL and 25 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.
Seen from the Block Island Ferry on the 22nd, 12 LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
At the Great Swamp Management Area on the 18th, 1 GREAT HORNED OWL, 2 HAIRY
WOODPECKERS, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE, 7 WOOD DUCKS and 1 AMERICAN WOODCOCK.
