This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, March 23 at 10:00 a.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to

The wintering PAINTED REDSTART on the UCSB campus was still present on March
17 [March 21]. Park in the Mesa parking structure and walk south, past
Campbell Hall, to the Chemistry building. The bird has been south of the
Chemistry building in a large fig tree, or in the open area around the
Eternal Flame.
A wintering female BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER is still in Stow Grove Park,
at the southernmost end of the park, in the smaller trees on the lawn and in
the large row of eucalyptus. The bird was still there on March 17.
At Bohnett Park in Santa Barbara, the wintering HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER was
still present on March 17.
Yesterday, a SWAMP SPARROW was seen in the wetland area southwest of the
junction of Los Carneros and Mesa Road, near UCSB. In the same area, two
BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen on the 17th.
On the UCSB campus, the first SURFBIRD of the season was seen on Campus
Point on the 18th.
A male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was in a bottlebrush tree at the south end of
Ellwood Beach Drive in Goleta on the 17th.
On the 20th, a CATTLE EGRET was at Devereux Slough.
In Goleta Slough, as seen from the bluffs on the north side of the UCSB
campus, a Eurasian race of the GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen on the 17th.
A EURASIAN WIGEON continued on Atascadero Creek on the 20th, near the end of
Ward Drive.
Two ROSS'S GEESE remain in the pond at the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park at
the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.
On the 20th, an [unconfirned] AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was reported from the
Harbor Seal Sanctuary in Carpinteria. A SURFBIRD was here on the 21st.
Highlights of last week's Cachuma Lake boat trips included one adult and 3
immature BALD EAGLES and a PEREGRINE FALCON. [4 CATTLE EGRET were seen in
the oaks above the marina yesterday.]
At Richardson's Park in New Cuyama, a male RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was reported
on the 17th.
At about mile 4.9 on Figueroa Mountain Road, two LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS were
seen on the 21st. At mile 8, there was a mixed flock of Lesser and
LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES.
In the North County, at Waller Park in Santa Maria, the wintering GRACE'S
WARBLER was still present on the 19th, in the short pines at the south end
of the basketball court near Area 3. Both the CACKLING GOOSE and the ROSS'S
GOOSE remain in the front pond.
At Jack O'Connell Park in Guadalupe, a male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen
on the 21st.
