Highlights: Pacific Loon, Iceland Gull, Mew Gull, Lewis's Woodpecker, and
Cave Swallows at a new site. Rosy Finches seem to be leaving. Lesser Prairie
Chickens have begun their show.

In Sandoval County:
MR and GS on March 17 had nine AVOCETS on Cochiti Lake with a BURROWING OWL
on a fence along NM 16.
In Taos County;
SH had a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE flying around Arroyo Hondo on March 18.
In Colfax County:
DC on March 16 at Stubblefield Lake had eight male RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS,
an immature BALD EAGLE, and heard a calling VIRGINIA RAIL. He saw a HORNED
GREBE on Lake 13 of the adjacent Maxwell Refuge with two early SWAINSON'S
HAWKS on the refuge.
There were five LONG-EARED OWLS at the roost in the thicket near the 't'
with Hwys. A5 and A1 on March 16 with a HORNED OWL.
He had a HORNED GREBE on Springer Lake on March 12.
And in Cimarron Canyon on March 14 there were two DIPPERS (one singing).
In Bernalillo County:
BH snowshoed north on Sandia Crest on March 4. At 3/4 of a mile beyond the
towers there was a male THREE-TOED WOODPECKER.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque the ROSY-FINCHES seem to be
leaving. The SNC banding team reported that so far this winter they have
banded 773: 579 Blacks, 186 Gray-crowned, and only eight Brown-capped. (1197
banded since January 2004). Nancy says that on March 18 no more were banded and
only small flocks were seen. SW reported he still had all three species on
March 15 when a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK caught one and a WHITE-THROATED SWIFT flew
by. The feeders will come down on April 1.
In Valencia County:
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen RB on March 18 found the six
BLACK-NECKED STILTS and found the BURROWING OWLS are still near the Taco Bell.
SW had two stilts on March 16.
In Socorro County:
SM on March 10 saw two female COMMON GOLDENEYES at Terry Lake on the NMTU
campus in Socorro just behind the new Fine Arts Bldg. on Canyon Drive.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio DC on March 5 had a tan-striped
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the Quail Pond, a gray FOX SPARROW, and a pair of
VERMILION FLYCATCHERS on the east side of the Marsh Loop. GF on March 7 had
a MERLIN over the Flight Deck and the White-throated Sparrow. SW still had
the four WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on March 17.
In Chaves County:
JH reported a high count of 235 LESSER SCAUPS on Bitter Lake Refuge on March
17. He had a probable GREATER SCAUP on Unit 6 on March 20. On March 19
there was 75 WHITE PELICANS on the south end and an AMERICAN BITTERN on Unit 6.
The bittern was seen again on March 20 by JH and by SW on March 17. JH on
April 22 reported no greater scaup, but two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, lingering
HOODED MERGANSERS, SNOWY PLOVERS coming in, and single bitterns on Units 5
and 15.
JP, WW, and LL had good LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKEN show with 22 present on March
17 north of the Waldrop Road Rest (40 miles east of Roswell) on the
Mescalero Sands.
SW had a TURKEY VULTURE (flying over US 285?) on March 15. On March 20 he
had another vulture and a BLACK0THROATED SPARROW on the eastern edge of the
county.
In Lincoln County:
SW on March 17 saw a GREATER YELLOWLEGS at the sewage ponds in Capitan.
In Sierra County:
At the Rock Canyon Marina tires on Elephant Butte Lake DC very early at dawn
from March 6 to 8 had the first winter ICELAND GULL with HERRINGS. They
then flew off (to the dump?). GF also reported the ICELAND Gill with six
Herrings on March 7. JP, BP, and WW saw it at 7:00 when it again flew off. DC
said on March 9 it returned to the tires at the marina at 3:30. JP and crew had
an adult MEW GULL at the marina at 11:00.
At Percha Dam State Park KS on March 5 saw over 40 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, and up
to seven PHAINOPEPLAS. GF on March 7 had five VERMILION FLYCATCHERS, the
Phainopeplas, one EASTERN BLUEBIRD with the Westerns, two MYRTLE WARBLERS, a
CLAY-COLORED and s gray FOX SPARROW. DC on March 9 saw the five WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE in the fields by the park. JP, BP, and WW on March 10 saw two
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS there.
JP, BP, and WW on March 10 saw another WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at Paseo del
Rio Park below Elephant Butte Dam and an EASTERN PHOEBE at the Oxbow Lake in
Truth or Consequences.
In Grant County:
DB had a singing PAINTED REDSTART on March 16 and 17 in the Lower Gallinas
Campground in the Black Range east of San Lorenzo.
EW saw an early VERMILION FLYCATCHER on February 24 and had up to 150 PINYON
JAYS over nearby Mogollon Creek on March 2. MF had a PYGMY OWL on March 4
on the Gila Bird Farm near the creek near Cliff and reported the first BLACK
HAWK returned on March 10. CF had a PEREGRINE FALCON there on March 4.
DZ found CROWS in Silver City in March.
LC had a BARN OWL in Mangas Springs on March 11.
In Hidalgo County:
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
LM on March 19 in Deming at the Mounain View Cemetery saw a CASSIN'S FINCH,
HUTTON'S VIREO, and EASTERN PHOEBE. At the Pecan Park trailer area there was
a BRONZED COWBIRD.
In Doņa Ana County:
JN has had an adult LEWIS'S WOODPECKER at his home on Snow Road near Mesilla
since February 23. It was still present for JN on March 13 with the
VERMILION FLYCATCHER and again on March 19.. Also found there March 13 was WESTERN
BLUEBIRDS and SWAMP SPARROWS, with a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flying over on March
19..
CBr on March 10 again saw the two HOODED MERGANSERS along the ditch on the
south side of Mesilla Hills Drive between Calle del Norte and Bilbo Lane.
In Fillmore Canyon in the western Organ Mts. CBr found a female OLIVE
WARBLER, AND five RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES. JN on March 13 found singing
BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS.
At the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park near Mesilla on March 17 JN found MARSH
WRENS, SWAMP SPARROWS, many VERDINS, 15 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and a SNIPE.
In Otero County:
CL and CBr on March 20 had a HARRIS'S HAWK over US54 ten miles south of
Alamogordo.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
JP, WW, and LL found a PACIFIC LOON at the Six-Mile Dam near Otis on March
16.
SRW on March 18 at Rattlesnake Springs saw a BROWN THRASHER and a flock of
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS flying over.
SW saw 28 TURKEY VULTURES over the north part of Carlsbad on March 4.
He found CLIFF and CAVE Swallows at an apparent new nesting site on US 295
1.1 miles north of the road to Sitting Bull Falls under a culvert.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On March 29 the trip is at the Rio Grande Nature Center with Allison
Schacht.
On Saturday, March 24 Mesilla Valley Audubon will explore the Holloman
Lakes. Contact is Walt Whitford at 521-1358.
On April 7 The Gila Native Plant Society will have a birding field trip up
Gold Gulch Road into the Big Burro Mts for mountain migrants. Contact is

The annual Lesser Prairie Chicken Festival at Milnesand will be April 13 to
