WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday March 26, 2007
A BARNACLE GOOSE was found in fields north of Old Deerfield at the end
of the dirt road on Saturday. On Sunday presumably the same bird was
seen in fields between Meadow and Russellville Road in Hadley along
with 6,000 CANADA GEESE, 2 CACKLING GEESE and a GLAUCOUS GULL. An
ICELAND GULL was also seen in Deerfield.
A CACKLING GOOSE and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE have been added to
the mix of ducks along Route 47 and adjacent roads in Hadley and
Sunderland this week. Look for them especially on Potyrala Road in
Sunderland.
Also seen in North Hadley were over 200 WOOD DUCKS, 2 GADWALL, 14
NORTHERN PINTAILS, 32 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 5 AMERICAN WIGEON, 58
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 GREATER SCAUP, 3 BUFFLEHEAD, 2 PIED-BILLED
GREBES, a WILSON’S SNIPE, and 4 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
In Sunderland there were 2 SNOW GEESE, 60 WOOD DUCKS, an AMERICAN
WIGEON, 4 NORTHERN PINTAIL, and 17 GREEN-WINGED TEAL.
Five TREE SWALLOWS, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 11 FOX SPARROWS were seen
in Belchertown, a BLACK VULTURE was reported in South Hadley, and 2
GADWALL and 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS in Hatfield.
In Longmeadow there were over 200 WOOD DUCKS, A GADWALL, 29 NORTHERN
PINTAIL, 20 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 16 AMERICAN WIGEON, 2 NORTHERN
SHOVELERS, and 11 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS.
At Forest Park in Springfield there was a GADWALL, a CANVASBACK, 46
RING-NECKED DUCKS and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. Six BLUE-WINGED TEAL
were on Watershops Pond in Springfield.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a CHIPPING SPARROW were seen in East
Longmeadow, an EASTERN TOWHEE was reported in Amherst, and 2 GREAT
BLUE HERONS were in Chicopee.
At Quabbin Park there were 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 15 GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
76 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 27 COMMON GOLDENEYES, an OLDSQUAW, 14
BUFFLEHEAD, a COMMON LOON, a PIED-BILLED GREBE, a BLACK VULTURE, and a
TREE SWALLOW.
Seen in the Turners Falls area were 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 70 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a RUDDY DUCK, 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES, and 15
TREE SWALLOWS.
Earlier in the week in Northfield 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were
noted along with 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 20 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 AMERICAN
WIGEON, and 4 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
Seventy-five SNOW GEESE were seen migrating high over Pittsfield, and
there were 2 TREE SWALLOWS at Onota Lake.
