The first GREAT BLUE HERON of the spring season arrived in our area on Thur
Mar 22. Lois and Bill Lang(e) observed a lone bird on a nest at the heronry
at Carseland-Wyndham PP. The heronry is off the group use area road running
eastward from Hwy 24 at the park entrance. The first FRANKLIN'S GULLS of
this season have been reported. Greg Wagner saw 2 birds at Frank Lake 6 kms
east of High River on Hwy 23 on Sat Mar 24; then on Sunday Mar 25, Lois and
Bill Lang and Lorne Kingwell observed 3-4 FRANKLIN'S GULLS at Frank Lake.
Lois and Bill Lang saw a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD just south of Irricana on Thur
Mar 22, then on Fri Mar 23, Mary Coughlin, Lucille Harrison and Mary Huston
observed 3 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS along Hwy 68 west of Calgary and saw 4 more
off the Horse Creek Road just west of Hwy 22 at Cochrane. They saw a
WESTERN MEADOWLARK on Rge Rd 254 just south of Twp Rd 273 east of Irricana.

Waterfowl reports over the weekend included a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
seen by Richard Clark on Thur Mar 22. The bird was in with CANADA GEESE on
a small pond 3-4 kms west of Frank Lake on Hwy 23. Bernard and Therese
Goulet observed a female LONG-TAILED DUCK on the river at the Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary on Sat Mar 24 , and 30 RING-NECKED DUCKS were new arrivals at
Frank Lake on Mar 24 where they were seen by Greg Wagner. Bill Wilson
observed a CACKLING GOOSE and 7 TRUMPETER SWANS just upriver from the Seebe
Dam on Mar 24.

There were numerous reports of Red-tailed Hawks over the weekend. This
included a dark-morph bird seen by Terry Korolyk on Mar 24 along Hwy 2 at
the north end of Calgary. Lois and Bill Lang reported 6 NORTHERN HARRIERS
near Irricana on Mar 22 while Mary Coughlin, Lucille Harrison and Mary
Huston saw 3 NORTHERN SHRIKES on Twp Rd 252 between Hwy 22 and 1. Sandy
Ayer observed a 2nd year GLAUCOUS GULL at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on
Sun Mar 25.

BIRD STUDY GROUP:

Bird Study Group meets 2st Wednesday of the month, Room 211, BioSciences
Bldg, U of C except June through August when field trips replace the
meetings. On April 4 Mike Mulligan presents a Gull Identification Clinic.

Sat Mar 31, 8:30am: Birding Griffith Woods Park, 2.5km W on Hwy 8 from
Sarcee Tr, then left at 69 St SW into Discovery Ridge. Continue straight at
traffic circle, then left on Discovery Link into parking lot. Leader, Mike

Sat Mar 31, 10am: Signs of spring: early wildflowers; migrating birds on
Nose Hill. Meet parking lot off 14 St at 64 Av NW. Leader, John McFaul,

Sun Apr 1, 8:30am: (NOTE TIME is CHANGED). Monthly Elbow River Birding
Survey. Meet Stanley Park, 42 Av SW, just W of Macleod Tr. Walk to Glenmore
