This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Wednesday March 28 with reports of BLACK BRANT, COMMON TEAL, EARED
GREBE, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.

A BLACK BRANT was viewed at Sandy Hook’s Spermaceti Cove Mar 26.
Also at the hook this week were 500+ LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 40+ GREAT
CORMORANTS, and 20+ AMERICAN WOODCOCKS. A good hawk flight Mar 27
included 42 AMERICAN KESTRELS. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy
Hook is available at Sandy Hook Bird Observatory; check the sightings
log there for daily reports.

A COMMON TEAL (a.k.a. EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL) was found at
Brigantine NWR near the gull pond tower Mar 25. A EURASIAN WIGEON
was also observed at Brig that day.

An EARED GREBE was reported from the end of Cedar Run Dock Rd in
Ocean County Mar 25 & 28. Birders are cautioned to look closely at
molting Podiceps grebes and note the exact bill shape and structure
when differentiating Eared from Horned Grebes during March and April.

Palmyra Cove Nature Park hosted 2 ICELAND GULLS and a LESSER BLACK-
BACKED GULL Mar 25.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was found off the National Park dredge spoils in
Gloucester County Mar 25.
.
A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was noted at Round Valley Reservoir Mar 23.
Also in Hunterdon County was a SHORT-EARED OWL at Spruce Run
Reservoir Mar 28.

Migrants noted at Garret Mountain Mar 23 included YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, PINE WARBLER, 21 FOX SPARROWS, and 13
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was observed at Roy Rd near Wallkill River NWR
Mar 24. REDHEADS continued at Swartswood Lake this week as well.

The Sandy Hook Migration Watch welcomes visitors and is open to the
public daily. The annual count of migratory birds is conducted at
the North Pond Observation Deck adjacent to parking area K. For more

Your help is needed! The New Jersey Audubon Society is currently
recruiting volunteers for bird surveys in grassland and Piedmont
areas of the state through our Citizen Science Program. Participants
must have prior experience in bird identification and be willing to
commit one weekend day in April for training and 2 to 4 days for
